DCI Launches Homicide Probe Into Death of Gospel Singer Rachel Wandeto After Brutal Mwiki Attack
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 19, the DCI confirmed that detectives from its Homicide Directorate had officially taken over the case after the gospel singer succumbed to severe burn injuries while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Directorate has taken over investigations into the brutal murder of Rachel Wandeto,” the agency said in a statement.
According to preliminary investigations, Wandeto was attacked on the evening of May 16 along 11th Street near Obama Road in Mwiki while heading home.

Detectives say she was allegedly confronted by three unidentified men who assaulted her using a flammable substance before setting her on fire and fleeing the scene.
The gospel artist was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in critical condition, with medical reports indicating she had suffered burns covering approximately 75 per cent of her body.
Her death has since sparked outrage online and renewed concerns over rising violent attacks, particularly those believed to have political undertones.
The attack has drawn significant public attention partly because of Wandeto’s vocal political support for President William Ruto and her public endorsement of his 2027 re-election bid.
The singer had previously attracted online debate after displaying a tattoo in honour of the Head of State, with some supporters praising her loyalty while critics questioned the move.
Following news of her death, President Ruto condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible would face the full force of the law regardless of political affiliations or connections.
“The criminals that attacked this hardworking and promising lady will be held to account, irrespective of their affiliation,” Ruto stated.
The President’s remarks came as pressure mounted on security agencies to fast-track investigations into the incident amid growing fears over politically charged violence.

Investigators are also attempting to establish whether the assault was premeditated and if the perpetrators specifically targeted Wandeto because of her political activities or public profile.
“Detectives are tirelessly working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this heinous crime and to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in its planning and execution,” the DCI added.
“Members of the public who possess any information that may assist with the investigation are encouraged to report at the nearest police station or anonymously through our 24-hour toll-free hotline,” the statement added.
Several leaders have also called for enhanced security measures in Nairobi estates following increasing reports of violent attacks and insecurity in residential areas.
As the investigation intensifies, family members, friends, and supporters continue mourning the gospel singer while demanding swift justice for what many have termed a horrific and senseless attack.
