Chaos in Eastleigh as Armed Goons Storm Businesses Amid Ownership Dispute
Terror and confusion gripped Eastleigh, Nairobi, after armed goons stormed a busy shopping complex on Friday night, August 29.
The gang, armed with crude weapons, smashed windows, disabled CCTV, and vandalized shops under the cover of darkness. Dozens of terrified traders watched helplessly as their businesses were looted.
According to eyewitnesses, the raid was linked to a heated ownership dispute between tenants and a new landlord.
“There has been a confrontation between the new owner and the tenants. The new owner wants to demolish the building, but the tenants are arguing that they have a lease protecting them from the demolition,” said one shop owner.
Millions Lost in Hours
The complex, which houses 64 textile shops, was left in ruins. Traders woke up to find broken glass, stolen merchandise, and destroyed equipment worth millions of shillings.

Legal Battle Turns Violent
The tenants claim they hold valid 15-year lease agreements with the previous landlord, with six years still remaining. However, the new owner has allegedly been pushing for premature eviction.
“We followed the law, we went to court. But what happened shows that justice can be ignored,” lamented another trader.
Police Response Under Fire
In desperation, shop owners called the police during the attack. Unfortunately, officers arrived too late to prevent the looting and destruction.
Now, business owners are demanding immediate government intervention.
“We want Nairobi County and the national government to act. If this continues, no business is safe,” said a visibly shaken shopkeeper.
Growing Fear of Anarchy
This attack is not isolated. Recent months have seen similar goon invasions across Nairobi, leaving entrepreneurs worried about a surge in lawlessness.

Many business owners now fear for their lives and investments. Some even warn that unchecked violence could drag the city into anarchy.
The Eastleigh traders say they will not give up their shops. Instead, they vow to fight back through the courts, even as they plead for urgent state protection.
