CA Issues 7-Day Ultimatum to 42 TV Stations, Sparks Panic in Media Industry

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has dropped a bombshell on the broadcasting industry. In a Gazette notice dated September 14, the regulator announced plans to revoke licenses of 42 television stations within seven days.

Among the affected outlets are Metropol TV, Mount Kenya TV, Kingdom Ambassadors TV, and Tourism and Wildlife TV (Safari Channel). The announcement has triggered shockwaves across the media landscape.

“Notice is given pursuant to the provisions of the Kenya Information and Communications Act (Cap. 411) that the Communications Authority of Kenya shall revoke the postal licences of the following service providers within seven (7) days from the date of this Gazette Notice,” CA Director General David Mugonyi stated.

“Upon revocation of the licences, the licensees shall not be authorised to operate and provide the services as indicated in the table above,” he added.

Why CA Is Cracking Down

The authority cited multiple violations. These include failure to pay license fees, lack of proper broadcasting infrastructure, and airing inappropriate content. According to CA, these measures aim to enforce compliance and uphold broadcasting standards.

This isn’t the first time regulators have targeted TV stations. Just three months ago, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) flagged 23 stations for airing illegal betting ads. Kameme TV was among those warned.

“Following the Board’s recent press statement announcing a 30-day suspension of betting advertisements, it has come to our attention that several media outlets continue to run unauthorised betting promotions,” BCLB Director Peter Mbugi said in May.

Industry Reacts with Concern

Media stakeholders are now scrambling to understand the full impact. Many fear job losses, content disruption, and reduced access to local programming.

“This move could silence community voices and cripple regional broadcasters,” said one media analyst.

Others argue that while regulation is necessary, the sudden crackdown feels harsh and poorly timed.

“We need dialogue, not destruction. Revoking 42 licenses in one week is extreme,” a station manager told reporters.

What Happens Next

If the stations fail to comply or appeal within the seven-day window, their licenses will be revoked. All resources under those licenses will revert to the authority.

Kenyans are watching closely. With livelihoods and media freedom at stake, the countdown has begun.
