Body of Raila Odinga Arrives at JKIA to a Tearful Welcome

The body of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Amollo Odinga, arrived in the country this morning to an atmosphere filled with emotion, sorrow, and national unity. The Kenya Airways flight KQ 203, renamed RAO001 in his honour, touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 9:39 a.m.

A Nation in Mourning Welcomes Its Hero Home

As the aircraft taxied to a halt, silence filled the air. The once-bustling airport came to a standstill as thousands gathered to witness the historic homecoming of the man who shaped Kenya’s political destiny for decades.

Raila’s remains were accompanied by a high-level Kenyan delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who had travelled to India to oversee the repatriation process. His coffin, draped with the Kenyan flag, was received with full military honours, symbolizing the country’s deep respect for its departed statesman

Standing at the front of the somber crowd was Mama Ida Odinga, Raila’s widow, holding back tears as she watched the casket being carried out of the plane. Beside her stood President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and other national leaders, reflecting a rare moment of unity.

An Honour Befitting a Patriot

The emotional ceremony began with the national anthem, performed by the Kenya Defence Forces band. The body of the late leader, wrapped in the national colours, was then placed on a red-carpeted podium as a mark of dignity.

“Kenya has lost a gallant son,” President Ruto said with a trembling voice. “Raila’s courage, resilience, and love for this nation will never fade. He taught us to dream big and stand firm for justice.”

The crowd murmured in agreement, many waving small Kenyan flags while others quietly sobbed. Raila’s political allies and rivals alike stood shoulder to shoulder, united in grief and respect.

From India to His Homeland

Before departure, Raila’s body had been draped with the Kenyan flag in Mumbai, India, at approximately 3 a.m. on October 16, 2025. Kenyan embassy officials and close family members had gathered at the Indian airport for a brief farewell ceremony.

“It was an emotional moment,” Mudavadi shared. “We all felt the weight of bringing home not just a leader, but a father of the nation.”

The plane’s renaming to RAO001 carried deep symbolism—an abbreviation of Raila Amollo Odinga and a mark of his historic leadership.

A Symbol of Unity and Legacy

As the coffin was escorted to Lee Funeral Home, chants of “Baba! Baba!” echoed from mourners who lined the airport road. Many waved placards reading “You fought for us,” and “Rest easy, people’s president.”

Security officers struggled to contain the swelling crowd as emotions ran high. Some broke into tears, others sang liberation songs that defined Raila’s political journey.

“He was not just a politician,” said a mourner outside JKIA. “He was our voice when no one listened.”

The government has since confirmed that Raila’s body will lie in state at Parliament for public viewing before the State Funeral at Nyayo Stadium. His final resting place will be in Kango Ka Jaramogi, beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and his son, Fidel Odinga.

As the motorcade slowly departed the airport, a sense of finality swept over the crowd. Yet amid the sorrow, there was pride—a pride born from the legacy of a man who never stopped believing in Kenya’s promise.

“He may be gone,” said a family spokesman, “but his spirit will forever live in the heart of every Kenyan who dares to hope.”

Today, Kenya mourns not only the death of a leader but also celebrates the life of a patriot who defined generations. The tears flowing at JKIA are not just of loss, but of gratitude—for a man whose courage and conviction shaped the nation’s destiny.
