Govt Releases Ksh42 Million to Harambee Stars After Stunning DRC Victory

Jubilation As Government Rewards National Heroes

The Harambee Stars are smiling all the way to the bank after the government disbursed a staggering Ksh42 million following their incredible 1-0 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the opening game of the 2024 CHAN.

The much-anticipated disbursement follows President William Ruto’s bold promise to award each player Ksh1 million for every tournament win. The team delivered—and so did the government.

“President William Ruto has fulfilled his commitment to pay Ksh1 million each to all 27 Harambee Stars players and 15 members of the technical bench,” read part of the statement released by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed on Monday.

Full Squad Recognized: No One Left Behind

Significantly, the reward extends to everyone involved in the historic win. This includes all players—starting eleven, substitutes, and reserves, along with the entire technical team.

“Every member of the squad was key to the victory. From the striker to the assistant physiotherapist, all will be rewarded equally,” Hussein emphasized.

That means each of the 27 players and 15 technical bench members receives Ksh1 million, totaling Ksh42 million in cash appreciation for their efforts on the pitch.

Next Match, Same Promise

This is just the beginning. As Kenyans now look forward to the upcoming clash against Angola on Thursday, August 7, the reward scheme remains firmly in place.

“If the Harambee Stars win again, they’ll receive the same amount. We believe in motivating our champions,” added Hussein.

The team is gearing up for the next game with renewed energy, knowing that their efforts are not only recognized but handsomely rewarded.

Star Performer Sparks Stadium Eruption

Kenya’s win over the DRC was made possible by Gor Mahia playmaker Austine Odhiambo, who netted the only goal with a brilliant solo effort right before halftime.

The crowd at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani erupted as thousands of fans chanted in unison, lifting the team’s spirits.

Big Stakes Ahead: Eyes on the Ksh600M Grand Prize

And this is just the start. President Ruto earlier announced an even larger incentive of Ksh600 million should the team go all the way and win the tournament.

Meanwhile, co-host nations Tanzania and Uganda are also offering player rewards, but Kenya leads the pack with the highest financial motivation.

The Harambee Stars’ group-stage journey continues with Angola, then Morocco on August 10, and Zambia on August 17.
