Sonko Pledges Whopping Ksh400M to Harambee Stars: “Let’s Win CHAN for Kenya!”

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stirred national excitement by promising a jaw-dropping Ksh400 million to Harambee Stars if they clinch the African Nations Championship (CHAN) title.

This comes shortly after President William Ruto pledged Ksh600 million to the team for a tournament victory—bringing the potential reward pool to Ksh1 billion.

“I Am Not Competing With the President,” Sonko Clarifies

In his statement, Sonko boldly declared:

“I want to commend the President for motivating our national team by promising them Ksh600 million if they win the CHAN tournament.”

He added with emphasis:

“In the spirit of supporting the good course of our President and motivating the team, I will be giving them Ksh400 million.”

Sonko was keen to make it clear that his offer wasn’t a political contest. Rather, it was an act of patriotism and unity with the President’s efforts to uplift Kenyan football.

“This is not a competition with the President. It’s about supporting him and encouraging our boys to bring that cup home.”

Dressed in Red, Black, and Green: Sonko’s Passion Unshaken

Wearing Kenya’s national colours from head to toe, the flamboyant politician recalled his consistent support for the team.

“I have been motivating our players in every game,” he said proudly.

He warned, though, against rewarding players individually.

“There was a time I used to gift them for every goal scored. That can bring individualism to the team,” Sonko explained.

“Each player should have an opportunity. That opportunity can be wasted while he can pass to another player who has a higher chance of scoring.”

This experience led him to stop goal-based bonuses, emphasizing team spirit instead.

Sonko’s Legacy of Football Philanthropy

Sonko’s love for Kenyan football is not new.

In 2013, as Nairobi Senator, he promised cash for a win against Nigeria. Although the game ended in a draw, he still gifted Ksh1 million.

In 2017, he made headlines for rewarding Harambee Stars with cash and incentives after their CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup win.

By 2018, he had pledged Ksh3 million and team lunch, and followed up in 2019 with another Ksh20 million offer.

Kenya Rallies Behind Stars with One Billion Reasons to Win

With Ksh1 billion now on the table, Harambee Stars face not just continental glory—but one of the biggest football rewards in Africa’s history.

Will this motivation be the fire that propels them to a historic win?

Kenya watches, waits, and hopes.
