Ruto Donates Ksh1M to Family of Slain Mask Hawker Boniface Kariuki Amid Calls for Justice

Pain still grips the family of Boniface Kariuki, the humble mask vendor who died after being shot in the head during the June 17 protests.

After two agonizing weeks in ICU and a failed emergency surgery, Boniface was declared brain dead, then clinically dead on July 1. He will be laid to rest on July 11 in Kangema.

On July 2, President William Ruto extended his condolences through Kangema MP Peter Irungu Kihungi, who visited the grieving family bearing a Ksh1 million donation.

“On behalf of President William Samoei Ruto, we conveyed his condolences and his commitment to ensuring justice is served,” Kihungi said.
“The President also extended a contribution of Ksh1 million to support the family with funeral arrangements.”

Cries for Help Ignored—Until Now

For days, the Kariuki family struggled in silence. Their hospital bill had ballooned to over Ksh3.6 million, yet no one came to their aid—until now.

“While the donation is a fraction of the bill, it’s a much-needed lifeline for the family,” Kihungi added.

The family had also raised concerns about police failing to record a formal statement, further deepening their frustration. However, leaders present promised swift action.

“Boniface’s death is a painful reminder of the urgent need for accountability in our security agencies,” Kihungi emphasized.
“We will not rest until justice is done.”

He Was a Vendor, Not a Threat

Kariuki was not protesting. He was simply selling face masks near the protest site, where demonstrators were demanding justice for blogger Albert Ojwang, who had allegedly died in police custody.

Suddenly, a bullet tore through his skull.

Despite emergency surgery that removed some bullet fragments, others remained. Doctors declared him brain dead 12 days later.

“He was an innocent man. His only crime was trying to make a living,” a relative said, holding back tears.

Leaders Unite in Mourning and Promise Action

Kihungi was joined by Murang’a Woman Rep Betty Maina, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, and area MCA Moses Muchiri, all calling for answers.
