Court Orders Standard Group to Pay Former CEO Orlando Lyomu Ksh 34M in 12 Months

In a ruling that underscores the price of breaching employment contracts, the Employment and Labour Relations Court has ordered Standard Group Plc to pay its former Chief Executive Officer, Orlando Lyomu, over Ksh34 million in unpaid dues.

The verdict, delivered by Justice Stella Rutto on April 9, marks a crucial win for Lyomu, who had been in a legal standoff with the media house since his exit in June 2023.

A Debt That Refused to Die

Initially, in October 2024, the court ordered Standard Group to pay Lyomu Ksh38.3 million. This included salary arrears, six months’ salary in lieu of notice, unpaid leave, and a March 2023 bonus.

However, things didn’t go according to plan.

By December 2024, the company had not honored the court-sanctioned consent agreement. As of March 2025, Lyomu had only received Ksh4.5 million out of the expected Ksh5.25 million.

That triggered a fresh legal push from Lyomu, prompting a new round of orders from the court.

New Court Orders: No More Delays

The court has now demanded that Standard Group pays the remaining Ksh34 million in 12 equal monthly instalments.

“That the Respondent pays the balance of the judgment amount in twelve (12) equal consecutive instalments,” the court stated.
“The first instalment is payable on or before May 5, 2025. The rest must follow by the 5th day of every month.”

Additionally, the court ordered Standard Group to clear legal costs of Ksh1,021,140, also in instalments.

“That the assessed party and party costs… be paid in two (2) equal consecutive instalments through the law firm of Nyachae & Ashitiva Advocates,” read part of the judgment.

This translates to roughly Ksh2.75 million per month to Lyomu and Ksh500,000 monthly for two months to his lawyers

A Bitter End to a Rocky Journey

Lyomu, who served as CEO from 2018 to 2023, took over from Sam Shollei. He had also held positions as Finance Director and Chief Operating Officer.

However, he stepped down amid financial struggles within the company that still persist today.
