Limuru, Kiambu County – Grief has engulfed Limuru after two fatal road accidents claimed 12 lives in under 24 hours along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway. The heartbreaking scenes have left families mourning, residents in fear, and authorities scrambling for answers.
Friday Morning Horror: Matatu Plunges Down Slope
In the most recent tragedy, which occurred on Friday, April 11, a Kijabeline Sacco 14-seater matatu lost control at Kamandura junction. It veered off the road, rolled down a steep slope, and came to a brutal stop in a ditch.
According to Limuru OCPD Mary Gachie, the matatu had departed from Nairobi and was headed to Kijabe town. The crash happened around 8:00 a.m.
“It is a tragic loss. The matatu lost control and rolled several times before landing in a ditch. We are still investigating the exact cause of the accident,” she confirmed.
Tragically, five passengers died on the spot, while two others succumbed while receiving treatment. Four survivors remain in critical condition at Tigoni Hospital.
Thursday Evening Crash: Tyre Burst Turns Fatal
Shockingly, this incident followed another deadly crash just hours earlier, on the evening of Thursday, April 10. Barely a kilometre away, a private car is believed to have suffered a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control.
Three occupants died instantly, while two more died later in hospital.
A Community in Mourning
Residents are in anguish. Shocked by the rapid loss of life, they’re now demanding immediate action from the authorities.
“We are calling on the authorities to put up speed bumps and proper signage. This area has become a blackspot,” urged Samuel Njuguna, a concerned local resident.
The wreckage of both vehicles has since been towed to Tigoni Police Station as investigations continue.
Police Issue Stern Warning to Drivers
With the roads wet and slippery from recent rains, police are urging extreme caution.
“We advise all motorists to drive carefully and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy,” said OCPD Gachie.
