Lucy Wambui: Court Orders Murder Suspects to Stay in Custody Until April 15

Nairobi – The three suspects accused of murdering businesswoman Lucy Wambui Kamau will remain in custody until April 15, 2025. A Kibera court ruled that a probation report must be filed before considering their bail applications.

Court Delays Bail Ruling

On Tuesday, April 2, Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Samson Temu ruled that a probation report was necessary to determine whether the suspects—Edna Wanjiru, owner of Body by Design Clinic, George Wakaria Njoroge, and Surgeon Robert Maweu Mutula—should be released on bail.

Magistrate Temu emphasized that while bail is a constitutional right, courts can suspend it if compelling reasons exist. “The justice system has yet to find a proper footing on the application of the compelling reasons ground,” he stated.

Balancing Justice and Victims’ Rights

The court acknowledged the complex nature of the case, noting that both the prosecution and the defense held contrasting positions. Magistrate Temu stressed the need to balance justice for the victim’s family with the suspects’ rights.

“I direct the probation officer to prepare a pre-bail report that considers both the victims’ and suspects’ perspectives to guide the court in determining bond terms,” he said.

With this directive, the suspects will remain in police custody until the next hearing on April 15, 2025.

Tragic End After Botched Surgery

Wambui died on October 6, 2024, following a failed liposuction procedure at Body by Design Clinic. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) later approved murder charges against the three clinic officials.

Authorities shut down the clinic after Wambui’s tragic death, sparking national outrage over medical malpractice and unregulated cosmetic procedures.

Sonko Promises Justice for Wambui’s Family

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has pledged to help Wambui’s family seek justice. He revealed that a private investigation had been launched to scrutinize the clinic’s operations and the qualifications of its medical staff.

Sonko accused the clinic’s surgeons of lacking the necessary expertise to perform such a critical procedure. He also disclosed that attempts were made to arrest the clinic’s officials before Wambui’s burial. However, her husband opposed the move.

What’s Next?

With the court prioritizing a comprehensive pre-bail report, Wambui’s family and Kenyans at large await justice. The upcoming April 15 hearing will determine whether the accused will secure bail or continue awaiting trial behind bars.
