Moses Wetang’ula’s Bold Push to Boost Bungoma Voter Numbers to 1 Million

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has launched an aggressive campaign to increase voter registration in Bungoma. Speaking in Bungoma County, he urged local leaders and administrators to mobilize residents to obtain identification cards and register as voters.

“We must ensure Bungoma reaches 1 million registered voters. This is the third-largest county, and we deserve a stronger voice,” Wetang’ula declared.

He asked chiefs and their assistants to help youths acquire IDs, ensuring no unnecessary vetting delays the process.

Government to Decentralize ID Issuance

Wetang’ula assured Bungoma residents that the government is decentralizing ID issuance bureaus to speed up the process.

“We discussed this with the president, and the government will establish more ID service centers. Only printing will remain centralized,” he announced.

He encouraged MPs and MCAs to actively participate in mobilization efforts to achieve the targeted one million voters.

Wetang’ula on Stalled Road Projects

Wetang’ula also addressed Bungoma’s stalled road projects, revealing that the government had allocated KSh 1.5 billion in the supplementary budget to complete them.

“These roads are crucial for economic growth. Their completion will improve trade, transport, and accessibility for our people,” he stated.

Leasing of Nzoia Sugar Company

On Nzoia Sugar Company’s financial crisis, Wetang’ula disclosed that Kenya Kwanza had found an investor willing to lease the factory.

“The investor will clear all outstanding debts, pay workers, and install new crushing machines,” he assured farmers.

He urged farmers to ignore critics opposing the lease and reminded them that Nyanza leaders had embraced similar plans for Sony, Miwani, Muhoroni, and Chemelil sugar mills.

“The new investor must honor the president’s directive on farmers’ bonuses. Farmers should benefit from at least six percent of their earnings,” he emphasized.

Farmers Encouraged to Diversify

Wetang’ula urged Bungoma farmers to explore alternative farming options, such as coffee, highlighting that coffee prices had risen from KSh 50 to KSh 114 per kilogram.

He also encouraged residents to register for the government’s new medical scheme, SHA, for better healthcare access.

Leaders Support Wetang’ula’s Call

Governor Kenneth Lusaka, Senator Wafula Wakoli, and MPs John Chikati, John Makali, Martin Pepela, and Didmus Barasa backed the leasing of Nzoia Sugar Factory.

“Leasing the factory is the only way to save it from total collapse,” Lusaka stated.

Senator Wakoli welcomed the government’s budget for stalled road projects, emphasizing that better infrastructure would open up Bungoma’s economy.
