DRC president declines Ruto’s invite for peace talks
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi has refused to participate in peace talks brokered by Kenyan President William Ruto. The summit, scheduled for Wednesday, aimed to resolve the ongoing M23 rebel crisis in Goma.
Tshisekedi’s decision, announced through state media, comes as tensions escalate in the eastern DRC. The official news agency did not disclose the reasons behind his refusal.
Rwanda’s Role in the Crisis
Ruto extended invitations to both Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The DRC accuses Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group, which has seized parts of Goma, including its airport. The United Nations (UN) also cites extensive evidence linking Rwanda to the rebel faction, though Kigali denies direct military support.
On Tuesday, Kagame held discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and expressed support for a ceasefire. However, he has not confirmed his participation in the virtual summit.
Goma Residents Struggle Amid Fighting
As fighting intensifies, Goma’s streets are filled with corpses, and hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties. Sporadic gunfire continues despite relative calm on Wednesday. Fear-stricken residents, previously hiding in safe zones, emerged to search for food, now in short supply due to days of unrest.
Warehouses containing essential food and medical supplies have been looted, worsening the humanitarian crisis. Electricity, water, and internet services remain unavailable, making survival even more difficult for the affected population.
Protests Rock Kinshasa
Anger over the deteriorating security situation has spilled into the capital, Kinshasa. Furious protesters attacked and looted at least ten foreign embassies, demanding international intervention to halt the rebel advance.
The situation in the DRC remains dire, with regional and international efforts struggling to contain the violence. Ruto’s summit was expected to foster dialogue, but Tshisekedi’s refusal casts doubts on a peaceful resolution. Meanwhile, the fate of Kagame’s participation remains uncertain.
As the world watches, the crisis in Goma continues to deepen, leaving millions at risk.
