Raila takes his AUC chairperson campaigns to Zimbabwe
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga arrived in Zimbabwe on Monday January 13, 2025 to seek support for his bid as African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa hosted Raila in Harare, expressing warm hospitality.
“We landed in Harare, Zimbabwe today to a warm reception courtesy of President Emmerson Mnangagwa,” Raila said on X.
He shared his vision for Africa during discussions with Mnangagwa, emphasizing his readiness for the AUC leadership role. “It’s been a pleasure sharing with the president my vision for Africa and discussing my candidature for the AUC Chairmanship,” Raila added.
The Road to the AUC Chairmanship
Raila faces tough competition from Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar. The African Union (AU), a 55-member continental organization, will hold elections in February 2025 to elect a successor to current chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.
The elections are conducted via secret ballot, requiring a candidate to secure two-thirds of eligible member states’ votes.
Significance of the AUC Chairperson Role
The AUC chairperson plays a critical role in driving the African Union’s agenda. They act as the executive head of the AU, overseeing programs that promote economic, social, and political unity across the continent.
The position is filled rotationally every four years among Africa’s five regions: northern, western, central, southern, and eastern. Candidates must possess exceptional qualifications and experience to manage the complex responsibilities tied to the role.
Raila’s Southern Africa Campaign Trail
Raila has launched an aggressive door-to-door campaign to rally support from southern African nations. This January alone, he plans to visit at least 10 countries in the region.
Raila’s move underscores his commitment to uniting Africa under shared development goals and fostering stronger intercontinental partnerships.

As the clock ticks toward the February election, Raila’s diplomatic engagements highlight the intense lobbying needed to secure the influential post. With competitors equally determined, Raila’s southern African tour will be crucial in swaying votes in his favor.
