William Ruto Fires 2 Cabinet Secretaries Less Than 5 Months after Their Appointment
President William Ruto stunned Kenyans by firing two Cabinet Secretaries less than five months after their appointments. This move aims to boost efficiency and align his administration with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Who Lost Their Positions?
On December 19, Ruto announced the dismissal of Andrew Karanja, Agriculture and Livestock CS, and Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u, ICT CS. Their exits created room for new appointees.
Mutahi Kagwe, the former Health CS, replaced Karanja as Agriculture CS. Meanwhile, William Kabogo, the former Kiambu Governor, took over from Ndung’u in the ICT docket. Despite losing their Cabinet roles, Karanja and Ndung’u received new assignments. Karanja will now serve as Kenya’s ambassador to Brazil, while Ndung’u becomes High Commissioner to Ghana.

Why the Sudden Changes?
Chief of Staff Felix Koskei explained the reshuffle in an official circular. “The President re-aligned ministries and state departments to improve performance and service delivery,” the statement read.
The reshuffle also brought back allies of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. In addition to Kagwe and Kabogo, former Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui returned as CS for Trade, Industry, and Investment.
Mixed Reactions to the Reshuffle
The public and political leaders responded differently to the changes. Some praised Ruto for prioritizing efficiency, while others criticized the abrupt dismissals.
A Push for Unity and Progress
This reshuffle follows Ruto’s bold move in July when he dissolved his entire Cabinet. At the time, he sought to address public discontent and included opposition members in his team.
Speaking about his decisions, Ruto emphasized unity. “We are committed to working together for the good of Kenya,” he said. This shift aims to heal political divisions and promote collaboration.
As the new Cabinet members assume office, Kenyans remain hopeful. Many expect these changes to deliver better governance and fulfill the President’s promises of transformation.
