Ruto Eyes Mutahi Kagwe for Cabinet Role as Nyeri Leaders Prepare for Crucial Talks
President William Ruto is set to fill two key vacancies in his Cabinet, with former Health CS Mutahi Kagwe emerging as a strong contender. Kagwe, who gained national prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, is being considered to replace Kithure Kindiki, now serving as Deputy President after his elevation from the Interior Ministry.
Reports suggest:
State House has dispatched emissaries to negotiate with Kagwe and other leaders from the Jubilee Party. These discussions aim to foster cooperation between Kagwe and the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance as Ruto seeks to solidify his government’s grip.
Local leaders in Nyeri have confirmed they will meet on Friday, November 22, to deliberate on Kagwe’s potential return to government and to strategize the region’s political alignment.
“We have called a meeting in Nyeri on Friday to discuss the issue and the future of the region. We want to be in government,” disclosed Thuo Mathenge, a Nyeri politician and former gubernatorial aspirant.
Why Mutahi Kagwe?
The move to bring Kagwe into the Cabinet is seen as a strategic effort to strengthen ties with the Mount Kenya region. Kagwe’s exemplary performance as Health CS during the pandemic has left a lasting impression on Kenyans, earning him respect across political divides.

However, the negotiations are not without hurdles. Analysts suggest Kagwe’s re-entry into the political scene under the Kenya Kwanza umbrella could raise eyebrows among Jubilee loyalists who remain skeptical of aligning with Ruto’s administration.
The Friday meeting in Nyeri will likely determine the region’s stance on the matter. Many leaders in the region view this as an opportunity to cement their influence in the government.
President Ruto’s efforts to balance his Cabinet reflect a broader strategy to consolidate regional representation and strengthen his government’s national appeal.
As the talks unfold, all eyes will be on Nyeri, where Kagwe’s political future could take a decisive turn.
