The Political Chessboard: A New Deputy Party Leader for UDA as Gachagua’s Era Ends
In a dramatic turn of events that has shaken the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to its core, Rigathi Gachagua, once a prominent face in the party’s upper echelons, has been formally removed as Deputy Party Leader.
This move by UDA’s National Executive Council, led by Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, comes on the heels of Gachagua’s impeachment as Deputy President by the National Assembly—a decision upheld by the Senate, sealing his political fate in the ruling party.
Kithure Kindiki say;
The communique, issued with clarity and finality, underscores a shift in the political winds, one that embraces new leadership under Professor Kithure Kindiki, an established figure in Kenya’s legal and political spheres.
“By the resolution of the National Assembly and the vote of the Senate, H.E. Rigathi Gachagua is unable to perform the duties of the office of Deputy Party Leader and subsequently ceases to hold office as Deputy Party Leader,” the statement reads, referencing key articles of both the UDA and Kenya’s constitutions that underline the authority of this decision.

Professor Kindiki, who steps in as Deputy Party Leader, is no stranger to political leadership. Known for his composed demeanor and legal expertise, he has long been a trusted ally of President William Ruto and an influential figure within the party.
This appointment raises interesting implications, especially with Kindiki’s recent assumption of Gachagua’s former role within the UDA, suggesting that a new era of leadership is not only emerging but being decisively cemented by the ruling party.
The shake-up, however, leaves another question looming in the shadows: the vacant seat at the Interior Ministry. For now, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi is filling the role, acting as an anchor during this transition.
UDA Strategy
Yet, the appointment of a permanent Interior CS has yet to be confirmed by President Ruto, leaving room for further speculation and a potential ripple effect across the nation’s political landscape.
This reshuffle paints a vivid picture of the UDA’s strategy—an ongoing recalibration aimed at securing and stabilizing its inner circle. With a consolidated leadership under Kindiki, the ruling party is setting its sights on a unified vision.
Meanwhile, Gachagua’s exit sends a clear message to both allies and rivals alike: the wheels of power are always turning, and in the world of Kenyan politics, positions are both earned and tenuous.
Only time will reveal the full impact of this change. But for now, as the UDA advances under its recalibrated leadership, one thing is certain: Kenya’s political scene remains as dynamic, unpredictable, and captivating as ever.
