Ezekiel Mutua Criticizes Mapangale Dance for Promoting Violence Against Women

Ezekiel Mutua, CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), has criticized the viral Mapangale dance. He claims it promotes violence against women. The dance, created by MC Zendiambo, shows two dancers mimicking the act of cutting with a machete. A male dancer plays the “cutter,” while a female dancer is the “recipient.”

Mutua voiced his concerns about the timing of the dance. “The song normalizes violence,” he said in an interview with TUKO.co.ke. “One dancer simulates attacking his partner with a machete. How is that not promoting violence? It’s harmful, not funny.”

Mutua added that the Interior Ministry flagged the song for its potential impact. “They could prosecute the artist but chose to involve MCSK instead,” he explained. “Our role is to support musicians while promoting decency.”

While Mutua understands the artist may not have intended harm, he urges them to accept constructive criticism. He stressed that the government is investigating whether the song breaks any laws. If the song is found harmful, it could be removed from streaming platforms.

The Mapangale dance has sparked mixed reactions. Some criticize it as inappropriate and dangerous. Others defend it as entertainment. However, Mutua calls for a balanced approach. “We can’t rush to ban the song or condemn the artist without proper findings,” he said. “For now, I encourage people to stop sharing and promoting it.”

This debate raises important questions about the influence of entertainment on society. As the investigation continues, many hope for more responsible content creation, especially regarding gender violence.
