Raila Odinga Gains Key Support from Mauritius in AUC Race

Raila Odinga’s campaign to become the African Union Commission (AUC) chair has gained strong momentum. Mauritius has withdrawn its candidate and chosen to back Raila.

Pauline Njoroge, a key member of Raila’s team, shared the update on Tuesday, November 26. She explained that Mauritius’ new Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, communicated the decision during a phone call with President William Ruto.

“Mauritius, which had a candidate for the AUC chairmanship, will now support Raila Odinga’s bid,” Njoroge revealed. “Prime Minister Ramgoolam informed President Ruto of this decision today.”

Ramgoolam, who recently won a tough election, is now shaping Mauritius’ foreign policy. His support for Raila shows a shift in priorities for Mauritius.

“The former Mauritius candidate had the support of ex-Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, who lost the election to Ramgoolam,” Njoroge explained.

Raila Gains More Support

Mauritius stepping down is a major boost for Raila. It highlights his growing influence across the continent. Raila has been working tirelessly to gain the trust and support of African leaders.

In just one week, he visited seven West African countries. During these visits, he met with presidents and shared his vision of a united and prosperous Africa.

Final Meeting in Nigeria

Raila’s West African campaign will end on Wednesday, November 27. He is scheduled to meet with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek more support.

This endorsement from Mauritius strengthens Raila’s position as a leading contender for the AUC chairperson role. With the elections set for February 2025, his campaign is gaining significant ground
