Grammy Recording Academy President Panos Panay Set for Nairobi Talks With Ruto
The President of the Recording Academy, Panos Panay, is expected in Nairobi later next month for high-level talks with William Ruto, in a visit that signals Kenya’s growing ambitions within the global creative economy.
According to an official statement released on April 29 by the Recording Academy, Panay will visit Kenya between May 26 and May 29 under the U.S. Department of State Arts Envoy Program. The trip is expected to centre on strengthening cultural ties between Kenya and the United States, with a particular focus on the music industry.
The academy confirmed the visit, noting that “the Recording Academy®’s President Panos A. Panay will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, from May 26 to May 29, 2026, for an official meeting with His Excellency President William Ruto.” The statement further indicated that the visit is part of broader efforts to deepen collaboration in arts and culture between the two nations.

At the heart of the discussions will be Kenya’s rapidly expanding creative sector, which the government has identified as a key pillar for economic growth and youth employment. Talks between Panay and President Ruto are expected to explore talent development, strengthening industry infrastructure, and expanding access to international music markets for Kenyan artists.
The visit comes at a time when Kenya is positioning itself as a regional hub for creative industries in Africa, with renewed focus on music, film, and digital content production. Government officials have increasingly highlighted the potential of the sector to generate revenue and create jobs, especially among young people.
Additionally, the Recording Academy president will interact with leading Kenyan artists and producers, offering a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration with global industry players. These engagements are expected to provide local creatives with insights into international standards and opportunities within the global music scene.

The visit builds on Kenya’s participation in the American Music Mentorship Program (AMMP), a joint initiative launched in 2024 by the U.S. government and the Recording Academy. The programme aims to connect emerging artists from different countries with experienced professionals in the American music industry, fostering skills development and cross-border collaboration.
The Grammy Awards, widely regarded as the highest honour in the music industry, remain central to these discussions. Presented annually by the Recording Academy, the awards recognise excellence across a wide range of musical genres and have long been considered a benchmark of global success.
While the proposal has generated excitement within the creative sector, questions remain about the structure and timeline of the potential hosting, including whether it would involve a full awards ceremony or a series of related events.

As anticipation builds ahead of Panay’s visit, stakeholders across Kenya’s creative industry will be watching closely, with expectations that the talks could unlock new opportunities and elevate the country’s position on the global cultural stage.
