The President of the Recording Academy, Panos Panay, is expected in Nairobi later next month for high-level talks with William Ruto, in a visit that signals Kenya’s growing ambitions within the global creative economy.

According to an official statement released on April 29 by the Recording Academy, Panay will visit Kenya between May 26 and May 29 under the U.S. Department of State Arts Envoy Program. The trip is expected to centre on strengthening cultural ties between Kenya and the United States, with a particular focus on the music industry.

The academy confirmed the visit, noting that “the Recording Academy®’s President Panos A. Panay will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, from May 26 to May 29, 2026, for an official meeting with His Excellency President William Ruto.” The statement further indicated that the visit is part of broader efforts to deepen collaboration in arts and culture between the two nations.

At the heart of the discussions will be Kenya’s rapidly expanding creative sector, which the government has identified as a key pillar for economic growth and youth employment. Talks between Panay and President Ruto are expected to explore talent development, strengthening industry infrastructure, and expanding access to international music markets for Kenyan artists.

The visit comes at a time when Kenya is positioning itself as a regional hub for creative industries in Africa, with renewed focus on music, film, and digital content production. In December 2024, President Ruto revealed that Kenya had committed Ksh500 million towards efforts to bring the prestigious event to the country.
