Two Kenyans Among 14 Dead in Juba Plane Crash

At least 14 people, including two Kenyan nationals, have died following a tragic plane crash near Juba in South Sudan, authorities have confirmed.

The fatal incident involved a Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft operated by CityLink Aviation Ltd, which went down approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Juba shortly after takeoff, according to a statement released by the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority on Monday.

“The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority confirms that an aircraft crash occurred approximately 20km southwest of Juba today. The aircraft involved was a Cessna 208 Caravan, registration 5Y-NOK, operated by CityLink Aviation Ltd,” the authority said in part.

Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft had departed from Yei en route to Juba International Airport at around 9:15am before losing communication mid-flight.

“The aircraft departed Yei enroute to Juba International Airport at 09:15 AM and lost communication at 09:43 AM,” the statement added.

According to aviation officials, the aircraft was carrying 13 passengers and one pilot at the time of the crash. Among those on board were two Kenyan nationals and 12 South Sudanese citizens.

“There were 13 passengers and 1 pilot (Captain) on board, two Kenyan nationals and 12 South Sudanese nationals. Unfortunately, there were no survivors,” the authority confirmed.

Emergency response teams were dispatched to the crash site shortly after the incident, but officials indicated that all occupants of the aircraft had died on impact. The wreckage was reportedly located in a remote area, complicating immediate access and recovery efforts.

Authorities in South Sudan have since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, with early assessments focusing on possible mechanical failure, weather conditions, and flight operations.

“Investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the aviation authority stated, urging the public to remain calm as more details are gathered.

The Cessna 208 Caravan is a widely used aircraft for regional and short-haul flights, particularly in areas with limited aviation infrastructure. While generally regarded as reliable, the aircraft has been involved in a number of incidents globally, often linked to operational challenges in remote regions.

The crash has sent shockwaves across both South Sudan and Kenya, with families of the victims awaiting official identification and further communication from authorities. Kenyan officials are expected to coordinate with their South Sudanese counterparts to facilitate consular support and repatriation processes.

Aviation experts note that East Africa’s growing reliance on small aircraft for regional connectivity underscores the need for stringent safety oversight and infrastructure improvements, particularly in areas with challenging terrain and limited navigation systems.

This latest incident adds to a series of aviation accidents reported in the region in recent years, raising renewed concerns about safety standards and regulatory enforcement.

Meanwhile, tributes have begun pouring in for the victims, as leaders and members of the public expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic حادث,” an official familiar with the situation said, describing the crash as a devastating loss.

As investigations continue, authorities have pledged to release further updates once more information becomes available, including findings from the crash site and technical analysis of the aircraft.

The tragedy highlights the persistent risks associated with regional air travel and the urgent need for continued investment in aviation safety systems across the continent.
