Sebastian Sawe Wins London Marathon, Becomes First Man to Run Sub-2 Hours

Kenyan long-distance runner Sebastian Sawe delivered a historic performance at the London Marathon, becoming the first man in history to complete a full marathon in under two hours in an official race setting.

Sawe, who had entered the race as one of the favourites, stunned the athletics world after crossing the finish line in an astonishing time of 1:59:30, rewriting the record books and setting a new benchmark in long-distance running. His performance shattered the previous world record of 2:00:35, which had been held by the late Kelvin Kiptum.

The achievement marks a defining moment in athletics, as the sub-two-hour marathon barrier has long been viewed as one of the sport’s ultimate frontiers. While previous attempts—such as controlled exhibitions—had seen athletes dip below the mark under special conditions, Sawe’s feat is being celebrated as the first time it has been accomplished in a competitive, officially recognised marathon.

Speaking shortly after the race, Sawe expressed disbelief and pride in equal measure, reflecting on the magnitude of his accomplishment. “I came into this race well prepared, but I did not imagine I would make history in this way,” he said. “Breaking two hours in a real race is something special, and I dedicate this to Kenya and to all athletes who dream big.”

The race itself unfolded at a blistering pace from the outset, with Sawe maintaining a steady rhythm alongside a leading pack through the early stages. As the kilometres ticked by, he gradually broke away, demonstrating both endurance and tactical precision. By the final stretch, it became evident that he was not only on course to win but also to challenge the long-standing record.

Observers noted that ideal weather conditions, combined with strategic pacing and Sawe’s peak physical form, contributed to the historic result. However, it was his discipline and composure under pressure that ultimately set him apart.

Athletics analysts have described the performance as a generational milestone, with comparisons already being drawn to some of the greatest moments in marathon history. The breaking of the two-hour barrier is expected to redefine expectations in long-distance running and inspire a new generation of athletes.

Sawe also paid tribute to his compatriot Kiptum, whose record he surpassed. “Kelvin set the standard, and we all looked up to him,” he noted. “This record is also in his honour because he showed us what was possible.”

The victory further cements Kenya’s dominance in global marathon running, with the country continuing to produce world-class athletes who consistently perform at the highest level. Sawe’s triumph adds to a rich legacy of Kenyan excellence in endurance sports, reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a powerhouse in long-distance athletics.

Organisers of the London Marathon hailed the race as one of the most memorable editions in its history, with fans lining the streets to witness what would become a landmark moment in sport. The electric atmosphere, coupled with Sawe’s extraordinary run, created a spectacle that will be remembered for years to come.

Despite the celebrations, questions are expected to arise regarding the verification and ratification of the record by World Athletics, which has strict criteria for world records. Nevertheless, early indications suggest that the performance meets the necessary standards for official recognition.

As the athletics world reacts to the breakthrough, Sawe’s name is now firmly etched in history. His sub-two-hour marathon not only redefines human limits but also signals a new era in competitive distance running—one where what once seemed impossible is now within reach.
