Pastor Kanyari Declares 2027 Political Bid, Reveals Seat He’ll Contest

Controversial Nairobi-based preacher Victor Kanyari has announced his intention to vie for elective office in the 2027 General Election, becoming the latest public figure to signal entry into Kenya’s increasingly celebrity-influenced political landscape.

In a statement shared via his social media platforms, Kanyari confirmed that he will contest for the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in Njiru Ward, marking his first formal attempt to transition from religious leadership into politics.

His declaration comes amid a growing trend of entertainers, influencers, and public personalities expressing interest in elective positions ahead of the next polls, a development that has sparked both excitement and scepticism among Kenyans.

“We are here,” Kanyari stated in his announcement, signalling his readiness to enter the political arena while rallying his supporters to back his candidature.

Call for Voter Registration

Alongside unveiling his political ambitions, the preacher urged Kenyans, particularly his supporters, to register as voters under the ongoing nationwide mobilisation campaigns.

His message aligned with youth-driven civic initiatives encouraging first-time voters to acquire identification documents and participate in the electoral process ahead of 2027.

Kanyari also introduced his campaign slogan, “leta wena ndani ya watu,” loosely translated as bringing goodness to the people, which he said would define his leadership approach if elected.

However, he did not disclose the political party under which he intends to run, leaving room for speculation about potential alliances as the election season approaches.

Mixed Public Reactions

His announcement has elicited varied reactions online, with some supporters expressing enthusiasm while others questioned the viability of his political ambitions.

A section of social media users encouraged him to align with established political parties, while others suggested he start with grassroots leadership as a stepping stone to higher office.

Others, however, voiced reservations about religious leaders entering politics, raising concerns about the intersection between spiritual authority and public office.

A Controversial Background

Kanyari remains a polarising figure in Kenya’s public space, largely due to past controversies surrounding his ministry. His rise to prominence was significantly impacted by an exposé conducted by Mohamed Ali, which raised questions about practices within his church.

Despite the backlash that followed, Kanyari has maintained a loyal following and continued his ministry, positioning himself as a resilient figure capable of navigating public scrutiny.

In recent remarks, he also sparked debate after openly admitting that his entry into ministry was not driven by a divine calling but by the material benefits he observed growing up.

“I saw my mother receive gifts like sugar and eggs while just sitting, and I wanted the same life,” he disclosed in a candid reflection that drew mixed reactions from the public.

From Pulpit to Politics

Political analysts note that Kanyari’s entry into politics reflects a broader shift where unconventional candidates are seeking elective office, often leveraging personal brand recognition to connect with voters.

While some view this trend as a sign of expanding democratic participation, others caution that popularity alone may not translate into effective leadership.

For Kanyari, the challenge will be to convince Njiru residents that he can transition from religious influence to governance, addressing key local issues such as infrastructure, service delivery, and youth empowerment.

Looking Ahead to 2027

As the 2027 General Election draws closer, more aspirants are expected to declare their intentions, intensifying competition at both local and national levels.

Kanyari’s bid adds a new dimension to the race in Njiru Ward, where established political figures are also expected to vie for the MCA seat.

Whether his popularity will translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but his entry underscores the evolving nature of Kenya’s political landscape, where the lines between celebrity, faith, and governance continue to blur.

For now, Kanyari appears determined to take his message from the pulpit to the campaign trail, setting the stage for what could be a closely watched contest in 2027.
