Heated Exchange as Gachagua Clashes with Journalists: “Are You Ruto’s Lawyers?”
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua engaged in a tense on-air confrontation with journalists during a live interview on Ramogi TV, repeatedly refusing to retract controversial remarks directed at President William Ruto and accusing the panel of defending the head of state.

Confrontation unfolds live on air
Gachagua, who has recently launched the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and embarked on a series of interviews with vernacular media outlets, appeared visibly agitated as the questioning intensified.
Rather than respond directly, he challenged the journalists’ motives, suggesting they were acting on behalf of President Ruto.
“Are you a lawyer for the president? … Are you here holding his brief? … Are you holding a brief for William Ruto?” Gachagua asked, interrupting the discussion.
“Have you condemned him? … Have you asked the president whether he has regret…?” he countered, shifting attention back to Ruto.
Integrity concerns raised
Journalists further pressed the former deputy president on whether his remarks complied with the leadership and integrity standards outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya — provisions that set ethical expectations for public officials.
Gachagua dismissed the concerns and declined to engage on the matter, repeatedly stating he would not answer what he characterised as defensive questions.

“I refuse to answer. I refuse to have you holding brief for William Ruto,” he said, cutting off attempts to steer the interview back to governance issues.
No apology forthcoming
When asked directly whether he regretted his earlier statements or considered them body-shaming, Gachagua remained unapologetic, insisting his comments were factual rather than abusive.
“I have no regret whatsoever for my utterances… There is no apology to make. I described the way he looks,” he said.
He maintained that he had not initiated the verbal dispute and accused critics of misrepresenting his words.
Exchange descends into stalemate
As the interview progressed, both sides spoke over one another, with the former deputy president repeatedly returning to his assertion that the journalists were acting as defenders of the president rather than neutral interviewers.
“I’m saying it’s you to ask him why he’s so agitated,” he added, referring to Ruto.
The tense exchange highlighted the increasingly confrontational tone of Kenya’s political landscape, particularly as leaders position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
Broader political implications
Analysts say the incident reflects deeper fractures within the ruling political establishment and underscores the role of media scrutiny in holding leaders accountable for public statements.

For viewers, the interview offered a rare unscripted glimpse into the strained relationship between a former deputy president and the current administration — a dynamic likely to shape national politics in the coming months.
Despite the contentious encounter, Ramogi TV later indicated that its editorial position remains committed to robust but fair questioning of public officials, regardless of political affiliation.
