Kenyans Stranded in India Offered Visa Extensions as Country Announces Waiver on Overstay
In a notice issued on Wednesday, March 18, the High Commission of India in Nairobi said the measure applies to all regular visas and e-visas that have expired or are due to expire soon, covering Kenyan citizens and other foreign nationals affected by travel disruptions.
“Taking into account the conflict situation in Gulf region, all types of visas/e-visas expiring or due for expiry soon would be extended for a month on gratis basis for the affected nationals,” the mission said.
Free Extension and No Penalties

In addition, authorities announced that penalties normally imposed for overstaying visas will be waived for those unable to depart due to the crisis.
“Penalty for any overstay by affected foreign nationals due to ongoing developments in West Asia after February 28, 2026 would be waived off,” the notice stated.
Officials added that exit permits required for foreign nationals leaving the country will also be issued at no cost, easing the administrative burden on travellers seeking to return home once flights resume.
Protection From Immigration Violations
This assurance is expected to reduce anxiety among stranded travellers concerned about potential legal consequences.
Foreign nationals arriving in India unexpectedly because of flight diversions linked to the conflict will also receive Temporary Landing Permits free of charge, allowing them to remain in the country lawfully while arranging onward travel.
Flights Disrupted by Regional Conflict
The measures come as airlines worldwide adjust routes and schedules due to heightened tensions in the Gulf and West Asia, which have disrupted major aviation corridors.
Kenyans travelling between Nairobi and Mumbai have been particularly affected after several flights were cancelled or rerouted. Broader airspace restrictions across parts of Asia have forced carriers to take longer paths, resulting in delays, higher operating costs, and reduced cargo capacity.
Travel industry experts say such disruptions can leave passengers stranded for days or even weeks, especially when connecting flights are unavailable or visas expire during the delay.

Relief for Students and Workers
The announcement is expected to provide significant relief to Kenyan students, business travellers, medical tourists, and workers who remain in India awaiting safe passage home.
Diplomatic sources say the decision reflects India’s broader humanitarian approach during international crises, prioritising the welfare of foreign nationals caught in unforeseen circumstances.
Ongoing Monitoring
The High Commission indicated that authorities are closely monitoring developments in the region and may adjust the measures depending on how long the disruptions persist.
For now, the visa extension and penalty waiver provide a crucial legal lifeline, ensuring that Kenyans stranded far from home can remain in India without fear of fines or legal complications until normal travel resumes.
As geopolitical tensions continue to reshape global mobility, such emergency immigration measures highlight the growing need for coordinated international responses to protect civilians

caught in the ripple effects of conflict far beyond the battlefield.
