U.S. Government Opens Applications for Fully Funded Fulbright Scholarships
The United States government has opened applications for its prestigious and fully funded Fulbright scholarship programmes, inviting eligible Kenyans to apply for academic and research opportunities in the U.S. ahead of the April 20, 2026 deadline.
In a statement issued on Friday, February 6, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi announced that applications are now open for the 2027–2028 Fulbright Foreign Student Programme (FFSP) and the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Programme (FVSP). The announcement was made under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, reaffirming Washington’s continued support for educational exchange with Kenya.
The embassy described the Fulbright initiative as the flagship international exchange programme of the U.S. government, aimed at nurturing academic excellence, leadership, and cross-cultural understanding through advanced study and research.
“Applications are now live for the 2027–2028 Fulbright Foreign Student Programme and the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Programme,” the embassy said. “The FFSP offers qualified Kenyan graduates the opportunity to pursue master’s-level study in the United States.”
The Fulbright Foreign Student Programme targets Kenyan graduates with strong academic backgrounds who are seeking to undertake master’s degree studies in U.S. universities. Successful applicants receive comprehensive funding covering tuition, travel costs, living expenses, and other related academic costs, allowing scholars to focus fully on their studies.
According to the embassy, the programme is designed to equip beneficiaries with specialised skills, global exposure, and professional networks that enhance career prospects both in Kenya and internationally. Alumni of the programme have gone on to hold influential positions in academia, public service, business, and civil society.
In addition to the student programme, the embassy announced the opening of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Programme, which caters to university faculty members, researchers, and senior administrators who already hold advanced degrees.
The FVSP enables participants to conduct research, teach, or contribute to curriculum development at U.S. institutions of higher learning for a specified period. The programme is intended to strengthen institutional linkages between Kenyan and American universities while supporting knowledge exchange and innovation.
“The Visiting Scholar Programme is open to qualified academics and professionals who wish to undertake research, teach, or engage in academic programme development in the U.S.,” the embassy noted.
To support interested applicants, the U.S. Embassy has scheduled a virtual information session on February 10, during which prospective candidates will receive detailed guidance on eligibility criteria, application requirements, and the selection process.
Application Process
Applicants have been advised to submit their applications online through the official U.S. Embassy website. Prospective candidates should navigate to the U.S.–Kenya exchange programmes section at ke.usembassy.gov and click on the Application Management link.
First-time users will be required to create an account by entering their personal and academic details, while returning applicants can log in using existing credentials to complete and submit their applications.
The embassy cautioned that the Fulbright programmes are highly competitive and urged applicants to submit complete and accurate applications well before the deadline.
As interest in international education continues to grow among Kenyan students and academics, the reopening of the Fulbright application window is expected to attract strong competition from across the country. The embassy reiterated that the selection process is merit-based and emphasises academic excellence, leadership potential, and commitment to community service.
