U.S. Embassy Warns of Planned Demonstration Near Gigiri

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert warning of a planned demonstration near its premises in the affluent Gigiri neighbourhood, urging residents, foreign nationals, and visitors to exercise caution as Kenya’s capital braces for public protests linked to international events.

In a notice released on Tuesday, January 13, the embassy said it had received reports circulating on social media about a demonstration expected to take place on Wednesday, January 14, in protest of recent U.S. military action in Venezuela. Participants are reportedly planning to gather in the vicinity of the embassy, raising concerns about potential disruptions in the area.

“There are reports on social media calling for a demonstration in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday, January 14, in protest of U.S. military action in Venezuela,” the embassy said in the advisory.

The planned demonstration comes amid heightened global reaction to the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela earlier this month. On January 3, U.S. forces conducted a military operation in Caracas that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, actions that have sparked widespread international debate and protests in various countries.

While the embassy has not indicated that it expects the protest to impact its operations, it has urged U.S. citizens and other foreign nationals in Kenya to remain vigilant.

“The United States Embassy does not expect that the protest will impact operations,” the advisory noted, “However, U.S. citizens are encouraged to remain cautious due to the possibility of gatherings in the area.”

The alert advised individuals to monitor local media for updates, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and maintain a low profile. It also recommended that U.S. citizens stay aware of their surroundings and maintain regular contact with friends and family to ensure their safety during the protest period.

Local political organisations and activist groups, including the Communist Party of Kenya (CPK) and the Kenya Left Alliance, have in recent days amplified calls for solidarity with Venezuelans, although it was not immediately clear how many people might participate in Wednesday’s demonstration.

Kenyan political analysts say the planned protest in Nairobi reflects broader international engagement on foreign policy issues, even among civil society groups within Kenya. Social media campaigns calling for demonstrations have steadily gained traction, drawing support from various youth and Pan-African organisations that view the U.S. military’s actions as a violation of international norms.

The embassy’s advisory stressed that while demonstrations are a legitimate form of expression, participants should conduct their activities peacefully and within the law. Local law enforcement agencies have yet to issue official guidance on security measures or road closures around the Gigiri area, though heightened police presence is anticipated given the proximity of the protest to diplomatic missions and key government installations.

Security experts caution that even peaceful demonstrations can become unpredictable, underscoring the need for both participants and bystanders to exercise caution.

“People should avoid areas where protests are expected, especially near diplomatic facilities, to prevent unnecessary risks,” one security analyst said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. Embassy has consistently issued advisories urging its citizens in Kenya to stay alert amid planned disruptions and gatherings, a practice aimed at ensuring the safety and wellbeing of U.S. nationals abroad.

As Nairobi prepares for Wednesday’s planned demonstration, both diplomatic and security officials continue to monitor the situation closely, balancing respect for democratic expression with the need to maintain public order.
