KNEC Releases 2025 KJSEA Results, Grades Candidates With New Point System

Nairobi, Kenya – The Ministry of Education has officially released the results of the 2025 Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA), marking a milestone for the pioneer cohort of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum. The examinations, conducted between October 27 and November 3, were designed to evaluate learners’ readiness to transition into senior secondary school in January 2026.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, while unveiling the results on Thursday, highlighted that seven subjects recorded a higher proportion of learners meeting expectations. Among the best-performing areas were Hindu Religious Education, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Creative Arts and Sports, Kiswahili, Christian Religious Education (CRE), and Agriculture.

“Out of the 1,130,459 candidates, 59.09 per cent have demonstrated potential to pursue the STEM pathway at senior school, 46.52 per cent qualified for the Social Sciences pathway, and 48.73 per cent showed potential for the Arts and Sports pathway,” Ogamba said.

Balanced Gender Distribution

Of the total candidates, 578,630 were male and 551,829 female, representing 51.19 per cent and 48.81 per cent respectively. The near parity in gender distribution was lauded by the Ministry as a reflection of inclusivity in access to education across the country.

New Performance Bands

Unlike traditional examinations, the KJSEA results were released without ranking. Instead, learners were placed into four performance bands: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Approaching Expectations, and Below Expectations. The Ministry explained that this shift aims to reduce unhealthy competition among students and schools while promoting a healthier learning environment.

The final scores were derived from three components: the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) taken in Grade Six (20 per cent), school-based assessments in Grades Seven and Eight (20 per cent), and the summative KJSEA assessment (60 per cent).

Each subject carried a maximum of eight points, with nine subjects tested, giving a possible cumulative total of 72 points. Learners scoring between 75–100 per cent were awarded seven to eight points under the Exceeding Expectations band. Scores between 41–74 per cent fell under Meeting Expectations, 21–40 per cent under Approaching Expectations, and 0–20 per cent under Below Expectations. Each band was further subdivided into an eight-level matrix for more precise placement.

“The results reflect learners’ continuous assessment progress and their performance at the end of primary-level education in Grade Nine. No rankings will be issued, as our focus is on nurturing talent and reducing unnecessary pressure,” Ogamba emphasized.

Accessing Results

To facilitate access, the Ministry has activated an SMS platform and online portals. Parents, teachers, and learners can check individual results by visiting kjsea.knec.ac.ke, entering the candidate’s assessment number and name, and accepting the privacy notice. Institutional results can be accessed through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal at cba.knec.ac.ke, where heads of institutions can download full reports.

Transition to Senior School

The released results will guide the placement of 1.13 million learners into senior schools, indicating not only their performance but also their preferred career pathways. The government announced that placements will be finalized by next week, with parents able to track the process digitally.

“This is a historic moment for our education system. We are ensuring that every learner is placed in a pathway that reflects their strengths and aspirations,” Ogamba said.

Conclusion

The 2025 KJSEA results mark a significant step in Kenya’s transition to the Competency-Based Education system. By introducing performance bands and eliminating rankings, the Ministry aims to foster inclusivity, reduce competition, and prepare learners for diverse career pathways. As the pioneer cohort moves into senior secondary school in January 2026, the reforms are expected to reshape Kenya’s education landscape for generations to come.
