Kenya Mourns Olympic Hero Hezekiah Nyamau After Long Battle with Cancer
Kenya is mourning the loss of one of its greatest sporting legends. Hezekiah Nyamau, an Olympic gold medallist and decorated soldier, passed away on Tuesday morning while receiving treatment in Nakuru County. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief and renewed calls for better support for retired athletes.
“We Have Been In and Out of Hospital”—Family Speaks Out
Nyamau’s granddaughter, Felister Nyamau, confirmed the heartbreaking news. She revealed that the 88-year-old succumbed to cancer after months of painful struggle.

“He was diagnosed with cancer in February this year,” said Nyamau’s second-born child. “Since then, we have been in and out of the hospital,” she added.
The family disclosed that they had exhausted all resources trying to save him.
“The disease has taken a great toll on him,” she said. “He has started to struggle with speech. We appeal to the government and well-wishers for support wherever possible.”
“A Champion in Every Sense”—Nyamau’s Glorious Career Remembered
Nyamau’s athletic achievements remain unmatched. He won gold in the 4x400m relay at the 1972 Olympics and silver in 1968. He also clinched gold at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and dominated East and Central African championships from 1967 to 1972.
Beyond the track, Nyamau served in the Kenya Defence Forces from 1963 until his retirement in 1997. After leaving the military, he ran a small business in Kiogoro, Nyamira.
“We Must Support Our Heroes”—Nyamau’s Final Plea to Government
Before his death, Nyamau voiced frustration with the government’s neglect of ageing athletes.

“The government has done little to support those who brought glory to Kenya,” he said in a past interview.
His words now echo louder, especially as more sporting icons pass away without proper recognition or care.
“Another Star Gone”—Jairus Birech’s Death Adds to National Grief
He won gold at the 2014 Africa Championships, silver at the Commonwealth Games, and gold again at the 2015 Diamond League.
“We are losing legends too soon,” said a former teammate. “Their sacrifices must not be forgotten,” he added.
“Let Us Honour Them”—Nation Urged to Act
As Kenya mourns, many are calling for a national framework to support retired athletes.
“We must honour our heroes while they’re still alive,” said a sports official.
Nyamau’s legacy will live on, but his final days remind us of the urgent need for change.
