Faith Odhiambo Quits Ruto’s Victim Compensation Panel Amid Pressure and Court Suspension

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has officially resigned from President William Ruto’s Victim Compensation Panel. Her exit follows weeks of mounting pressure and a court order halting the panel’s operations.

“I Tendered My Resignation”—Odhiambo Breaks Silence

On Monday, Odhiambo announced her resignation as Vice Chairperson of the 15-member panel.

“Earlier today, I tendered my resignation from the position of Vice Chairperson of the Compensation Panel,” she said. “I will continue to agitate for justice for all victims,” she added.

Her decision comes at a time when Kenya is grappling with constitutional reform and demands for accountability.

“This Is a Crucial Moment”—LSK Must Stay Independent

Odhiambo emphasized the importance of preserving LSK’s independence.

“This consequential moment calls for all rule of law institutions to remain unified and resolute,” she stated. “Especially the Law Society of Kenya,” she stressed.

She noted that the panel’s 120-day mandate had already been suspended by the High Court, making its future uncertain.

“My Commitment Remains Impregnable”—Odhiambo Vows Continued Advocacy

Despite stepping down, Odhiambo promised to keep fighting for victims of police brutality.

“I will continue to prosecute matters on behalf of victims of police excesses,” she affirmed. “We must safeguard holistic justice for victims,” she added.

She also highlighted gaps in Kenya’s victim reparations framework.

“There remains a significant gap that must be addressed urgently,” she warned. “LSK will engage stakeholders to fix these legal infirmities,” she promised.

“Her Appointment Was Controversial”—Critics Slam Panel’s Legitimacy

Odhiambo’s appointment had drawn sharp criticism from civil society, opposition leaders, and legal experts. Many argued it compromised LSK’s neutrality.

On September 8, the High Court suspended the panel’s operations following a petition by Lawyer Levi Munyeri.

“Better Late Than Never”—Munyeri Welcomes Resignation

Reacting to the news, Munyeri praised Odhiambo’s decision.

“Faith Odhiambo, you have done the right thing,” he said. “Better late than never,” he added.

He urged the public to now focus on dismantling the rest of the panel and ensuring justice for victims.

“Panel Still Suspended”—Court Extends Orders

Meanwhile, the High Court in Kerugoya extended conservatory orders barring the panel’s operation until October 21.

As the legal battle continues, Odhiambo’s resignation marks a turning point in Kenya’s fight for victim justice.
