Poisoned Lions Rescued in Maasai Mara as KWS Launches Urgent Investigation

A wave of concern swept across Kenya on Monday morning after six lions from the same pride in Oleisukut Conservancy, Maasai Mara, were found poisoned. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed the incident just days after the country marked World Tourism Day on September 27.

“We Acted Swiftly”—KWS Saves Lions from Brink of Death

In a statement, KWS revealed that the lions had been spotted showing signs of poisoning. Their veterinary team rushed to the scene, treated the animals, and relocated them to safety.

“Six lions in Oleisukut Conservancy were reported showing signs of poisoning,” KWS stated. “Our veterinary team responded swiftly, administered emergency treatment, and stabilised the pride,” the statement added.

Four lions have fully recovered. However, two remain under close monitoring.

“Thankfully, all six survived,” KWS confirmed. “We remain steadfast in our mandate to conserve and protect Kenya’s iconic species,” they declared.

“Cause Still Unknown”—Investigations Underway

Although the lions were saved, the cause of the poisoning remains a mystery. KWS has launched investigations to determine the source and prevent future incidents.

“We reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding our wildlife heritage for current and future generations,” KWS emphasized.

Images and videos shared online showed the lions looking drowsy and weak in their natural habitat, sparking outrage and sorrow among wildlife lovers.

“Tourist Disruption Still Fresh”—Maasai Mara Faces Another Blow

This incident follows another troubling event in the Maasai Mara. On August 20, tourists disrupted the famous wildebeest migration by leaving their safari vans and running toward the animals for photos.

“Tourists blocked the migration path, forcing animals back into the crocodile-infested Mara River,” a witness recounted.

The viral clips triggered public backlash. However, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano clarified that the incident lasted less than a minute.

“Tourists were shooed back to their vehicles immediately,” Miano said.

The County Government of Narok denied claims that rangers were bribed. They explained that the vehicles were parked at a designated viewing point.

“Tourists can leave vehicles with guards to view hippos or use toilets,” the county stated.

“We Must Do Better”—Kenyans Demand Accountability

As investigations continue, Kenyans are demanding stricter enforcement of park rules and better protection for wildlife.

“Our animals deserve safety. This must never happen again,” one conservationist urged.

The Maasai Mara, a global treasure, now faces renewed scrutiny and calls for reform.
