Chaos in Kericho: Tengecha Boys Dormitory Burnt as Student Unrest Spreads

Kericho County is reeling from yet another school inferno. On Tuesday night, students at Tengecha Boys High School in Kapkatet went on a rampage, setting one of their dormitories ablaze. The fire destroyed property worth thousands, leaving over 100 students displaced and the community in shock.

“We Saw Flames Everywhere”—Locals Rush to Help

The fire reportedly broke out around 8pm, moments after a group of students began protesting. Although the exact cause remains unclear, many believe the blaze was intentional.

“We saw flames everywhere. Students were shouting. It was chaos,” said a local resident. “We rushed in and helped stop the fire before it spread,” he added.

Videos shared online showed the dormitory engulfed in flames as villagers and students battled to contain the inferno.

Tengecha Incident Follows Litein Boys Rampage

This latest unrest comes just days after a similar incident at Litein Boys High School, located only 8 kilometers away. There, students reportedly protested over the administration’s refusal to allow them to watch an Arsenal vs. Manchester City match.

“They were angry. They wanted to watch the game. Things escalated fast,” said a teacher from Litein.

The school was closed indefinitely after students allegedly refused to sit the Apex exams—a joint test administered across several schools in the region.

Cheptenye Boys Also Hit by Arson Attack

Shockingly, this marks the third school fire in Kericho County within two weeks. On September 11, students at Cheptenye Boys High School reportedly set two dormitories ablaze during afternoon lessons.

“We managed to put out the fire, but the damage was already done,” said a student who witnessed the incident.

Although no injuries were reported in any of the three cases, the destruction has raised serious concerns about student discipline and school management.

Parents and Leaders Demand Urgent Action

The wave of unrest has left parents worried and leaders scrambling for solutions. Many are calling for immediate investigations and reforms.

“This is unacceptable. Our children are destroying their future,” said a concerned parent. “We need answers and accountability,” she added.

As schools struggle to restore order, the Ministry of Education faces mounting pressure to address the root causes of these violent protests.
