Panic in Bungoma Court as DCI Officer Accidentally Fires Gun, Injuring Five
A routine court session in Bungoma turned chaotic after a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer’s firearm accidentally discharged. The incident, which occurred at 10:50am during a criminal hearing, left two officers and three civilians injured.
“At 10:50am, during the hearing of a criminal matter in the High Court, a DCI officer’s firearm accidentally discharged a bullet,” Judiciary Spokesperson Paul Ndemo confirmed. “It injured him, a Kenya Prison’s Officer, and three civilians.”
Victims Rushed to Hospital
Immediately after the incident, all five victims were rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.
“They are all reported to be in stable condition. There were no serious injuries or fatalities,” Ndemo assured.
Despite the panic, court officials and other members of the public remained unharmed. The Judiciary quickly moved to calm fears.
“All court officials as well as members of the public at the Court are safe. There is therefore no need for alarm,” Ndemo added.
Security Agencies Launch Investigation
Following the shooting, Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi confirmed that security teams had been dispatched to assess the situation and begin investigations.
“We want to reassure the judiciary of their safety and cooperation in this matter,” Njagi stated. “We are going to do everything possible to ensure that this kind of incident does not occur in the future.”
The Judiciary also announced that the County security team had visited the court premises to evaluate the scene and ensure safety protocols were reinforced.
DCI Promises Accountability
In response to the incident, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations pledged to take appropriate action. They promised to investigate the lapse and ensure accountability.
“Appropriate measures will be undertaken to ensure accountability and address any potential lapses,” DCI stated.
This incident has sparked concern among legal professionals and the public alike. Many are now questioning the protocols surrounding firearms in courtrooms and demanding stricter safety measures.
Public Calls for Reform
As the investigation unfolds, Kenyans are calling for urgent reforms. The presence of loaded firearms in courtrooms has raised alarm, especially given the potential for tragedy.
“This could have ended much worse. We need tighter controls,” said a Bungoma resident outside the court.
With five people injured and a community shaken, the pressure is now on authorities to act swiftly and prevent future mishaps.
