Karura Forest Gets Eyes in the Sky as KFS Deploys Drones for Security
“The drone unit from the Security and Protection Directorate now conducts regular aerial patrols throughout the forest,” KFS announced.
The statement came just days after a viral image claimed to show a python slithering along forest paths. Although the image remains unverified, KFS confirmed receiving similar reports in 2019 and 2022.
Drones to Work Alongside Ground Patrols
KFS assured the public that the new aerial surveillance will complement existing ground patrols.

“This new security system provides better monitoring of the forest area,” the agency stated. “It gives visitors confidence as they walk, cycle, and picnic.”
The forest, a beloved escape for Nairobians, has recently faced concerns over safety. Allegations of a takeover from the Community Forest Association (CFA) have added to the tension.
Public Urged to Stay Alert
In a statement issued on September 5, KFS urged caution. They advised visitors to stick to designated paths and report any unusual sightings immediately.
“In case of any sighting, the matter should be reported immediately to KFS Forest Rangers located at the various gates,” the agency said.
Additionally, pet owners were warned to keep their animals leashed at all times.

“Visitors with pets are advised to consider keeping them on a leash along the designated tracks only,” KFS added.
These guidelines aim to prevent panic and ensure safety for all forest users.
Collaboration and Commitment
“We remain committed to keeping Karura Forest safe and accessible for all Nairobi residents and visitors,” the statement concluded.
This proactive step has sparked mixed reactions. While many applaud the use of technology, others question the timing and motives behind the drone deployment.
Nevertheless, the forest’s guardians are watching from above—and they’re not blinking.
