Govt Imposes Curfew in Tipis, Mau Narok After Deadly Clashes and Displacement

The government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Tipis and Mau Narok after violent clashes left one person dead.

The Saturday night attack forced dozens of families to flee their homes. Survivors recounted terrifying scenes as more than 200 masked attackers descended on villages.

Houses were torched, residents were beaten, and key roads were blocked with burning tyres. By dawn, 12 homes had been reduced to ashes, while families sought refuge with neighbors.

Survivors Speak Out

One survivor described the horror, saying the attackers came without warning.

“They came in hundreds, masked and armed. We could not defend ourselves. Many were injured, and we lost everything,” the survivor recounted.

The incident exposed the deep-rooted tensions in the area, going far beyond a reported two-month blackout.

Government Moves to Restore Calm

On Sunday, Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara announced strict security measures to stop further violence.

“We now have a curfew in effect. If 7pm finds you in the plantation, you will have to spend the night there and continue your journey in the morning,” Kibaara warned.

The curfew runs from 7pm to 5am for one week in Tipis and Mwisho Wa Lami. Security patrols have been intensified, with police directed to arrest anyone found violating the order.

Police Explain the Cause

Authorities initially downplayed the clashes, linking them to frustrations over prolonged power outages. But by Sunday, the narrative shifted.

Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru explained that the violence escalated after residents blocked roads.

“The situation began as a disagreement. Roads were blocked, and tensions flared. Unfortunately, it quickly turned into violent confrontations,” Opuru said.

Communities on Edge

For most of Sunday, tension gripped Tipis, Mau Narok, Mauche, and parts of Njoro. Families remained displaced, unsure whether it was safe to return.

The region has a bloody history of inter-community violence, with clashes reported in both 2018 and 2020. Many fear the latest incident could spiral into another cycle of revenge attacks.

Local leaders have urged calm, calling on security forces to act decisively against the attackers. Residents, however, remain shaken and demand lasting peace.
