Gachagua’s Convoy Temporarily Halted by Stone-Throwing Youths on Mombasa Road

Chaos erupted on Thursday when rival groups clashed during the homecoming of Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Stone-Throwing on Mombasa Road

The confrontation started near Cabanas along Mombasa Road, close to Airport North Road. Youths threw stones at each other and at vehicles in Gachagua’s convoy.

Vehicles in the motorcade slowed as stones rained down.

Rival groups later blocked the road with huge rocks. The barricades paralyzed traffic and left many motorists stranded.

Police Delay, Violence Spreads

Despite a heavy police presence, the youths clashed for several minutes without interference.

Moments later, officers began blocking some of the youths on motorbikes. But by then, damage was already done.

At one point, Gachagua had to duck back into his car. Earlier, he had waved from the sunroof, but the attack forced him inside.

Airport security at JKIA had also intervened earlier. “Step back inside and allow tension to calm,” officials advised after he first waved from his car roof.

Journalists Under Attack

The chaos extended beyond the convoy. Journalists covering the event were targeted.

Reporters from Standard Group and Royal Media Services were attacked along Mombasa Road. Their vehicle was damaged during the fracas.

One journalist said, “We were heading to Kamukunji when stones hit our car. We had to escape quickly.”

The attack raised alarm over the safety of the press at political gatherings.

Motorists Seek Alternative Routes

Traffic on the opposite side of the highway, heading to Athi River and Kitengela, moved smoothly.

However, the side used by Gachagua’s supporters was blocked. Many motorists were forced to divert.

“We had no choice but to use the Expressway,” one motorist explained. Others turned back to avoid the violence.

Political Tension Builds

The violent clashes overshadowed Gachagua’s much-anticipated address at Kamukunji. His supporters had gathered in large numbers, but the chaos disrupted the event.

By evening, Kenyans expressed outrage. Many demanded tighter security measures during political rallies
