The bold university student who challenged President William Ruto during the International Youth Day in Kakamega has finally opened up. Jevin Oyoo, now nicknamed Omba Omba Comrade, has shared details of his private conversations with the Head of State.

Viral Moment That Shook the Youth Event

On August 12, Jevin grabbed headlines after fearlessly asking Ruto to support struggling NGOs. He pleaded with the President to consider grants for grassroots organisations working with youths. His courage won him admiration across social media, with many calling him a voice of the youth.

“Indeed, I talked to the President ‘behind the tent’. It was not a walk in the park. In fact, I made history in my lineage as the first person to talk to the President,” Jevin revealed during a TV interview.

The Call He Never Expected

Jevin explained that after the viral moment, he gave Ruto his number, not expecting much to follow. Surprisingly, the President later tried to reach him directly.

“Shock on me, he called me. I never picked because I thought it was the PA who would threaten me with abduction,” Jevin admitted.

He ignored two calls before Ruto sent him a simple text.

“He then texted me ‘Hello’. I called him back, and he picked up. He asked me what I wanted,” Jevin recalled.

Speaking for More Than Himself

Caught off guard, Jevin said he carefully chose his words. He wanted to represent more than his personal needs.

“I had to think of something to tell him so that he could see I was not just tabling my own interests. I told him about a programme I was running in Uasin Gishu, which is empowering over 50 youths. It’s a community-based organisation, and we are struggling to get grants,” Jevin explained.

Ruto listened attentively and gave a promise.

“I asked him to help us get some grants or do something for the organisation. He told me he would look into that,” Jevin said.

Why He Stayed Silent on Some Details

When pressed about what else he discussed with Ruto during the famous “behind the tent” talk, Jevin declined to share.

“If I open up everything, I will receive unwarranted calls,” he noted cautiously.

Despite criticism from some of his colleagues, Jevin stands firm. He continues to champion youth rights, even embracing the controversial nickname Omba Omba Comrade.
