William Ruto Fires Back at Justin Muturi, Slams His Tenure as AG: “Incompetent”

President William Ruto has publicly criticised former Attorney General and current Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, calling his tenure “fairly incompetent.” Ruto accused Muturi of mishandling crucial legal matters, including delays in establishing the Waqf Commission.

Speaking during an Iftar dinner at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday, March 25, Ruto assured the Muslim community that the long-standing Muslim Endowment Fund issue would soon be resolved.

“I agree with you that the Muslim Endowment Fund has taken too long. There is no reason. I had a problem with the AG who was there before—he was fairly incompetent. But now, I have a very competent lady in the position, and I can assure you that the issues of Waqf will be sorted out within months,” Ruto declared.

Muturi’s Controversial Tenure

Muturi served as Attorney General from 2022 to 2024 before being dismissed alongside most of Ruto’s Cabinet following the historic Gen-Z-led protests on June 25, 2024. His term was marked by tensions with the president, especially regarding issues like abductions and extrajudicial killings.

Ruto’s latest remarks have fueled speculation about his strained relationship with Muturi, with many wondering if the former AG might be ousted from his current Cabinet Secretary position.

Ruto Assures the Nubian Community

Beyond slamming Muturi, Ruto also addressed concerns from the Nubian community. He promised to officially recognise them as part of Kenya’s diverse society.

“I want to assure our Nubian brothers and sisters that they are solid members of the Kenyan community. They are going to be mainstreamed either by Madaraka or Jamhuri Day celebrations. This year, we will conclude the process of recognising them as part of our society because they have contributed immensely to Kenya’s progress,” Ruto affirmed.

This pledge comes amid ongoing debates about historical injustices and the integration of marginalised communities in Kenya.

Muturi Defiant Amid Criticism

Despite Ruto’s attack, Muturi remains defiant. He has challenged Members of Parliament to impeach him if they believe he is unfit for office. He also revealed that he had written to Ruto, informing him of his decision to boycott Cabinet meetings until his concerns about national interests were addressed.

With tensions escalating between the president and one of his top Cabinet officials, political analysts predict a major shakeup in the coming months.
