Wetang’ula Blames Maraga’s Protest Role for Loss of Security
In a dramatic twist to Kenya’s ongoing political tensions, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has broken his silence on the controversial withdrawal of security for former Chief Justice David Maraga.
Speaking at a Mama Mboga Empowerment Forum at Lukusi Primary School in Webuye East on Friday, June 27, Wetang’ula squarely blamed Maraga’s recent public actions.
“The former Chief Justice was seen at the Gen Z protests,” Wetang’ula declared.
“That alone raises serious questions about the conduct of someone who once led the Judiciary.”
He warned that such behavior risks damaging the image of Kenya’s justice system. More so, he cautioned, it could mislead youth who idolize leaders like Maraga.

“You can’t use young protestors for personal or political agendas,” Wetang’ula emphasized.
“It’s not just reckless—it’s dangerous.”
According to the Speaker, leadership demands wisdom, especially from someone with Maraga’s legacy.
“You carry influence,” he said directly to Maraga.
“Use it to build, not destroy.”
The bold remarks came just hours after Maraga went public with a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police and the Ministry of Interior. In the letter, the retired CJ protested the unexplained withdrawal of his police detail.
“Under the Act, the Retired Chief Justice is entitled to police security and drivers,” Maraga wrote.
“These are to be provided upon request by the retired Chief Justice.”
He recounted how, on June 25—the day he joined protestors and victims’ families—one officer was told not to report for duty.

“Instead,” Maraga revealed,
“he was told to go make a routine monthly entry in the firearm register.”
The next day, things escalated.
“On June 26, I was informed that the rest of the officers had been ordered to report to their stations,” he stated.
“No explanation was provided.”
This sudden removal of protection, Maraga argued, goes against the constitutional provisions safeguarding retired public officers.
While the Interior Ministry has yet to issue an official response, Wetang’ula’s comments have sparked intense online debate. Many Kenyans are now questioning whether Maraga’s role in the protests justifies what some see as a punitive move.

The controversy highlights a growing divide between the political class and civil society. As Gen Z-led protests gain momentum, voices of influence like Maraga’s are becoming central to Kenya’s unfolding political narrative
