“On behalf of the US Embassy, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the Kenyan police officer who died yesterday while working to improve security for the Haitian people,” the statement read. “The United States is grateful for the courageous Kenyan police who are serving in harm’s way to keep our world safer.”

According to Godfrey Otunge, commander of the Kenyan forces in Haiti, the officer was shot on Sunday, February 23, during an operation in Haiti’s western Artibonite region. The mission aimed to dismantle gang strongholds and restore order.

The fallen officer’s death marks the first fatality involving a Kenyan security personnel in Haiti since the country took the lead in the UN-backed mission. Kenya deployed the first batch of police officers on June 25, 2024, to help the Haitian National Police combat criminal gangs.
The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the officer’s death, revealing that his patrol team came under heavy gunfire from suspected gang members.
“While on patrol on February 23, 2025, the security team came under fire from suspected gang members. The officer sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed. The family of the deceased has been notified,” NPS said.

“The mission, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is working tirelessly to restore peace and stability in Haiti. We commend the officers who remain committed to achieving the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission,” the NPS added.
