Shock at the Ombudsman Office: Mercy Wambua and Two Senior Officials Suspended Over Misconduct

A storm has hit the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), popularly known as the Office of the Ombudsman. On Friday, October 31, the Commission announced the immediate suspension of three senior officials over allegations of gross misconduct, incompetence, and insubordination.

“Suspended Effective Immediately” — CAJ Confirms Action

In a statement released to the public, CAJ confirmed the suspension of Commission Secretary and CEO Mercy Wambua, Assistant Director of Finance Bernard Nyariki, and Assistant Director of Supply Chain Management Damaris Mburu.

“The officers have been suspended from duty, effective immediately, to ensure a fair and transparent disciplinary process,” the statement read.

The Commission emphasized that the decision follows internal reviews and aligns with its Human Resource Manual.

“We’ve Invited Investigators” — Dulo Calls for External Probe

CAJ Chairperson Charles Dulo revealed that the Commission had uncovered possible financial irregularities. As a result, they have called in external agencies to investigate.

“In light of apparent financial irregularities, the Commission will invite the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to conduct independent investigations,” Dulo stated.

This move signals a serious escalation in the matter, raising questions about the integrity of the institution.

“A Trail of Controversy” — Mercy Wambua’s Tumultuous Career

Mercy Wambua, who took over as CEO of CAJ on March 4, 2022, has had a career marked by both accolades and controversy. She previously served as CEO of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) for six years.

During her LSK tenure, she also held roles as Secretary to the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal and the Advocates Benevolent Association. She sat on the board of Kituo cha Sheria and worked at the Ministry of Justice.

However, in 2021, LSK members voted to send her on compulsory leave. The High Court later reinstated her after nearly five months.

“I’ve faced challenges before. I’ve always come out stronger,” Wambua said in a past interview.

Her rise to CEO at just 36 years old in 2016 made headlines. She became one of the youngest to hold such a position in the region.

“From Honors to Suspension” — A Fall from Grace

Wambua’s career has also been decorated with honors. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded her the Order of Grand Warrior (OGW) for her contributions to legal reform.

Now, her suspension marks a dramatic turn in her journey.
