Shock as National Police Service Halts Mass Recruitment After Court Order

Thousands of hopeful Kenyans were left stunned after the National Police Service (NPS) abruptly postponed its nationwide recruitment exercise. The decision followed a court ruling that halted the process just hours before it was set to begin.

“Recruitment Postponed Until Further Notice”—Court Blocks Police Hiring

On Thursday, October 2, the Employment and Labour Relations Court issued interim orders stopping the recruitment. The exercise was scheduled to start on Friday, October 3, and run until October 9.

“In accordance with the Order… the police recruitment exercise has been postponed until further notice,” read the NPS statement.

The court acted on a petition filed by Harun Mwau, challenging the legality of the entire process.

“Respondents Must File Responses”—Justice Wasilwa Sets Tight Deadlines

Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa directed the National Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police to respond within seven days. The petitioner was also given seven days to file further submissions.

“All parties must comply with the timelines set by the court,” Justice Wasilwa ruled.

This legal twist has thrown the recruitment of 10,000 police officers into uncertainty.

“We’re Pursuing Legal Remedies”—NPS Vows to Resume Soon

Despite the setback, the NPS assured the public that efforts were underway to resolve the matter.

“The National Police Service… is actively pursuing appropriate legal remedies,” the statement continued. “We aim to resume the recruitment exercise at the earliest opportunity,” it added.

However, no new date has been announced, leaving thousands of applicants in limbo.

“We Were Ready”—Applicants Express Disappointment and Frustration

Many young Kenyans had prepared for months, hoping to secure a spot in the disciplined forces. The sudden postponement has crushed their expectations.

“I travelled from Kisii to Nairobi for this,” said one applicant. “Now I don’t know what to do,” he added.

Others expressed concern over the lack of clarity and urged the government to act swiftly.

“We Remain Committed”—IG Kanja Promises Transparency

Just a day before the court ruling, Inspector General Kanja had addressed the media at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus.

“We are committed to conducting a credible and transparent recruitment process,” IG Kanja stated.

Now, all eyes are on the court and the NPS as the country awaits the next move.
