Senate Speaker Amason Kingi Orders Arrest of Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit
The dramatic directive followed reports that Governor Lelelit had been spotted within Parliament precincts despite an active warrant of arrest issued against him. The warrant arose from his repeated absence before the Senate’s oversight committee, which had summoned him to respond to audit queries concerning county finances.
At approximately 3:25pm, Speaker Kingi instructed the Sergeant-at-Arms to act without delay after confirming the governor’s presence within the premises.
“In the meantime, I order the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort Governor Samburu if he is still within the premises of Parliament to the nearest police station,” Kingi directed.

The order came shortly after Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot raised the matter on the floor of the House, urging the Speaker to take immediate action to enforce the warrant.
“This is a serious matter which we require your urgent attention on, Mr Speaker. And because I know these proceedings are being followed online, issue directives before the governor disappears and let him be taken to the police station here in Parliament,” Cheruiyot said.
“These games that are being played with Parliament must be brought to an end. The only person that can bring that game to an end is you, the Speaker of the Senate of Kenya,” Wambua stated.
Wambua also referenced recent incidents involving other county leaders, including Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, alleging a pattern of resistance to Senate oversight and enforcement measures.
The Senate’s watchdog committee, mandated to oversee county governments’ financial accountability, has in recent weeks expressed frustration over what it describes as persistent non-compliance by several governors. Committee members have warned that failure to attend hearings undermines the Senate’s constitutional oversight role.
The incident also comes just a day after a similar enforcement attempt involving Governor Johnson Sakaja, where police officers camped outside his City Hall office in Nairobi in a bid to arrest him for failing to appear before a Senate committee.
Observers say the back-to-back incidents signal a more assertive approach by Parliament in dealing with non-compliant county leaders. However, questions remain about the broader implications for intergovernmental relations and the balance of power between national and county institutions.
As events continue to unfold, attention will be on whether Governor Lelelit will be formally apprehended and presented before the Senate, and how other governors will respond to the increasingly firm stance taken by the legislative body.

For now, the Speaker’s directive marks a significant escalation in the enforcement of Senate authority, sending a strong signal that defiance of parliamentary summons may attract immediate legal consequences.
