The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, is in mourning following the passing of his longtime personal bodyguard, George Oduor.
Oduor, who had served the former Prime Minister for over two decades, breathed his last at Nairobi West Hospital on Wednesday, April 2, after being admitted for two weeks. Known for his unwavering dedication, he was a familiar face alongside Raila at public events and political engagements.
A Respected and Trusted Ally
ODM’s Director of Communications, Philip Etale, took to Facebook to announce Oduor’s demise, describing him as a loyal friend who always stood by him.
“This is one man who stood by me at all costs. I have lost a friend. Big bro. Rest Easy George. Wa!” wrote Etale in his emotional tribute.
Oduor was an integral part of Raila’s inner circle, often seen by his side during political rallies, protests, and official functions. His commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the ODM leader earned him admiration from many Kenyans.
Mourning a Dedicated Servant
Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir also expressed his sorrow, highlighting Oduor’s character and contributions.
“George was not just a friend to me personally, but a cherished member of our broader community. His presence and warmth touched the lives of many. He was a man of great integrity, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to the values that bind us together. His passing is a deep loss—not only to his family and friends but to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” Nassir stated.
The loss of Oduor has left a void within the ODM fraternity, with many paying tribute to his dedicated service and unwavering loyalty to Raila. His presence at key political events, including past anti-government demonstrations, made him an influential and trusted figure.
A Painful Reminder of Past Loss
Oduor’s passing comes less than three years after the tragic death of another bodyguard linked to the Odinga family. On October 14, 2022, Barrack Oduor, who was attached to Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, was shot dead in Kisumu’s Mamboleo area.
Following that incident, Ida Odinga expressed her condolences and urged young people to stay away from drug-related activities, emphasizing the need for a responsible and secure future.
