Police, Military Launch Probe After KDF Soldier Found Dead in Locked Juja Home

Detectives from the Kenya Police Service, working alongside military investigators from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), have launched a joint probe into the mysterious death of a soldier whose body was discovered inside her locked home in Juja, Kiambu County.

The deceased has been identified as 44-year-old Elizabeth Wanjiru, a KDF officer attached to the Department of Defence headquarters in Nairobi. Her death has raised concerns among both security agencies and residents, given the unusual circumstances under which her body was found.

According to preliminary reports, Wanjiru’s body was discovered after family members raised alarm when she failed to respond to repeated phone calls over an extended period. Concerned for her safety, relatives reportedly went to her residence, only to find the house locked from the inside.

A family source said, “We tried calling her several times without success. When we got to the house and found it locked from the inside, we feared something was wrong and decided to force entry.”

Upon gaining access, the relatives found Wanjiru lying lifeless on a sofa in a pool of blood. Authorities noted that she had visible injuries on her face, with initial observations suggesting possible electrocution, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Police indicated, “The body had visible marks, but the exact cause of death is yet to be determined. All possibilities, including electrocution or foul play, are being investigated.”

Security personnel from both the police and the military quickly secured the scene, launching a joint investigation aimed at establishing the sequence of events leading to her death. Officers have since begun collecting forensic evidence and interviewing individuals who may have interacted with the deceased in her final hours.

The body was later transferred to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital Mashujaa Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination is expected to provide further clarity on the cause of death.

An investigator familiar with the case stated, “We are treating this matter with the seriousness it deserves. A postmortem will guide the direction of the investigation.”

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue, emphasising that no conclusion has been reached regarding whether the death was accidental or criminal in nature.

The incident comes amid another ongoing investigation involving a suspicious death in Sagana, Kirinyaga County, where a 77-year-old woman was found dead in her home under disturbing circumstances.

The woman, identified as Margret Wambui Nyoike, was discovered lying on the floor of her residence, with signs pointing to possible foul play. Reports indicate that her body had a scarf tied around the neck, suggesting strangulation, and a footprint was reportedly observed on her chest.

Police handling the Sagana case said, “The nature of injuries suggests possible homicide, but investigations are ongoing to establish what exactly happened.”

Authorities also noted that the elderly woman lived alone, and efforts to trace her relatives are still underway. Her body has since been moved to a mortuary pending further investigations.

The two incidents, though not officially linked, have raised fresh concerns over safety and the need for heightened vigilance, particularly for individuals living alone.

Security officials have reiterated, “We urge members of the public to check on their neighbours and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.”

As investigations into both cases continue, authorities say they are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served. The findings from the postmortem examinations and forensic analysis are expected to play a crucial role in determining the next course of action.
