Peter Kaluma Criticizes Ruto for Cabinet Nominations Favoring Mt. Kenya

Nairobi – President William Ruto’s latest Cabinet reshuffle has triggered heated debate, with critics raising questions about regional fairness. Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluma strongly criticized the changes, accusing Ruto of favoring Mt. Kenya at the expense of other regions.

Kaluma Decries Regional Imbalance

Kaluma argued the reshuffle ignored the need for equal representation across regions. He said Ruto gave Mt. Kenya multiple Cabinet slots while leaving out areas like Nyanza and Western Kenya.

“The president focuses too much on Mt. Kenya, giving them an entire package of positions. Other regions receive scattered slots,” Kaluma said. He compared this reshuffle with the July appointments, where five positions were distributed across ODM strongholds.

“Ruto gave Gachagua 6 Cabinet Secretary slots, he appointed all from Mt. Kenya. Ruto gives Uhuru slots in government, he appoints all from Mt. Kenya. Whatever ODM gets, it shares across the Nation. I hope a time will come in my lifetime when all of us will live under Article 10 of the Constitution and see Kenya beyond their home regions, like Baba,” he said”

During the July nominations, prominent figures like Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya, Beatrice Askul, Opiyo Wandayi, and John Mbadi secured Cabinet roles. Kaluma lamented the lack of similar diversity in the latest appointments.

Key Changes in Ruto’s Cabinet

The reshuffle introduced significant changes to the government lineup. Kipchumba Murkomen moved from Youth Affairs and Sports to the Interior Ministry. Salim Mvurya, previously in charge of Investments and Trade, was reassigned to Sports.

Former Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui took over Mvurya’s role in Investments and Trade. Mutahi Kagwe, once Health CS, was appointed as the CS for Agriculture and Livestock Development. Meanwhile, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo became the new CS for Information, Communication, and Digital Economy.

Ambassadorial Assignments for Ousted CSs

Ruto reassigned two dismissed Cabinet Secretaries to diplomatic positions. Margaret Nyambura, formerly the ICT CS, was named Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana. Andrew Karanja, who led Agriculture, was appointed as the ambassador to Brazil.

Mixed Reactions Follow Cabinet Reshuffle

The reshuffle has divided opinions. Some praised Ruto’s bold strategy, while others criticized its lack of inclusivity. Kaluma urged Ruto to prioritize unity by considering all regions. “The president must see beyond Mt. Kenya,” he insisted.

This reshuffle continues to fuel debates about balancing regional representation and ensuring equitable leadership in Kenya
