NTSA Begins Issuing ‘KE’ Number Plates as 6-Month Vehicle Registration Data Emerges
The new number plates have begun appearing on roads across the country, attracting attention from motorists and members of the public. Some Kenyans have also raised questions about whether they can reserve specific combinations, including prefixes such as KEG and KES.
However, NTSA has clarified that the appearance of the new plates does not represent the launch of a new registration system.
An NTSA official explained that the plates are being issued as part of the normal vehicle registration process.

“The move from KD to KE is simply the normal progression of the vehicle registration series as the available numbers in the previous series are used up.”
The official said motorists whose registration applications are being processed may receive vehicles carrying the new prefix as NTSA continues allocating registration numbers.
“There is no official launch required when moving from one registration series to another. It is part of the normal administrative process.”
NTSA records indicate that 207,259 new vehicles were registered between January and June.
January recorded the highest number of registrations at 37,650 vehicles. May followed with 36,299, while March recorded 35,798. June had 35,334 registrations, followed by April with 34,041 and February with 28,137.
Motorcycle registrations increased to 24,167 in May before slightly falling to 22,696 in June.

Station wagons were another major category, with 42,808 units registered during the six-month period.
The data also covered other categories, including pick-ups, lorries, trailers, vans, buses, saloon cars, three-wheelers, wheeled tractors and other motor vehicles.
The NTSA clarification is expected to ease confusion among motorists who had interpreted the appearance of KE plates as a major policy change.
The authority said vehicles receiving the new plates will continue to follow the existing registration procedures.
“Motorists receiving KE number plates are still undergoing the same registration process. The KE prefix is simply the next available series.”

For motorists, the key message from NTSA is that the new KE number plates do not introduce new registration rules. They simply mark the continued progression of Kenya’s existing vehicle registration system as older number combinations are exhausted.
