Murkomen Asks Judiciary to Hand Violent Protesters Harsh Penalties
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has boldly called on the Judiciary to issue stern penalties against those involved in the recent violent protests. Speaking in Elgeyo Marakwet on Saturday, July 12, during a development tour with President William Ruto, Murkomen did not mince his words.
“They wanted to test whether we would take legal action,” said Murkomen.
“We will arrest all criminals who are attacking people and burning their property.”
Unprecedented Violence
“We have seen demonstrations before, but what we witnessed recently is unprecedented,” he declared.
“Goons burning police stations, stealing guns, and torching courts – that’s not what Article 37 of our Constitution provides for.”

He reminded the public that peaceful picketing is a right – but destruction of public property is criminal.
Leaders Supporting Violence Face Arrest
Murkomen sent a chilling warning to politicians supporting or fueling the unrest.
“Any leader, whether an MCA, MP, governor, or whatever position, will have their day in court,” he warned.
The government, he emphasized, will not tolerate incitement or lawlessness, no matter who is involved.
Over 500 Arrested During Saba Saba
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) confirmed the scale of arrests linked to the protests. Over 500 demonstrators were apprehended, according to a statement released by KNCHR Vice-Chairperson Dr. Raymond Nyeris on July 8.
The Saba Saba Day protest, which marked the 1990 pro-democracy movement, spiraled out of control. Several businesses were looted, and police responded forcefully.
While some demonstrators were released, others still remain behind bars. On July 9, 111 protestors in Laikipia were freed on Ksh 50,000 bail each. Additionally, 125 were freed by the Makadara Law Courts.
However, nine protesters accused of looting a Nairobi supermarket are still in custody.
Call for Judicial-Executive Synergy
Murkomen urged the Judiciary to work hand-in-hand with the Executive.

“We must act together to restore law and order in this country,” he said.
He stressed that restoring peace requires a unified response from all arms of government.
