Millions in Property Lost as Fire Razes Down Mirithu Girls Dormitory
A devastating fire has left dozens of students counting losses after a dormitory at Mirithu Girls High School in Limuru was razed down, destroying property worth millions of shillings and raising fresh concerns over safety in learning institutions.
The late-night inferno, which broke out earlier this week, is reported to have started in one of the school’s dormitories before spreading rapidly to adjoining sections. Images and videos circulating online show towering flames engulfing the structure, with thick smoke billowing into the night sky as efforts to contain the blaze intensified.
Preliminary reports suggest that the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault while students were attending evening classes. The dormitory, largely constructed from timber, is believed to have accelerated the spread of the flames due to the highly flammable nature of the material.

Despite the scale of destruction, school authorities confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident. A roll call conducted shortly after the fire indicated that all students and staff on duty were accounted for.
Witnesses at the scene described frantic efforts by students, teachers, and members of the surrounding community to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Their swift response is credited with saving other parts of the school from being consumed.
One school official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the incident as overwhelming, noting that “the fire spread so fast that there was little we could salvage from the dormitory.”
Inside the destroyed structure, students lost virtually all their belongings, including bedding, uniforms, books, and personal items. The extent of the damage has left many learners stranded, with uncertainty looming over how normal operations will resume.
Education officials are expected to assess the damage and determine immediate interventions, including temporary accommodation arrangements for affected students and support for those who lost essential learning materials.
The incident adds to a growing list of school fires reported across the country in recent months, many of which have targeted dormitories and caused significant disruption to learning. Authorities have repeatedly raised concerns over infrastructure standards, electrical safety, and possible cases of arson.

The trend has alarmed education stakeholders, with some calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and routine inspections to ensure compliance with building and fire safety standards.
A senior education officer familiar with the Mirithu incident emphasised the need for urgent reforms, stating that “schools must prioritise safety infrastructure, including proper wiring, fire detection systems, and emergency response plans.”
Investigations into the exact cause of the fire at Mirithu Girls High School are ongoing, with authorities expected to release a detailed report in the coming days. Fire experts and law enforcement officers have already visited the scene to collect evidence and assess possible causes.
As affected students begin the process of recovery, calls are mounting for government agencies, school administrations, and communities to work together in preventing future tragedies.

For now, the focus remains on restoring normalcy, supporting displaced learners, and ensuring that such incidents do not continue to disrupt education across the country.
