Millie Odhiambo Responds to Reports Linking Her to Dismissal of U.S.-Based Kenyan Nurse James Opande
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 19, the outspoken legislator said she was shocked to learn that her name had been dragged into reports concerning the alleged termination of James Opande, insisting she had no role in any employment decision involving him.
“I have not reported Opande anywhere, nor have I influenced any action against him,” Odhiambo said, dismissing the accusations as baseless.
Confusion Over Online Backlash
According to the MP, she only became aware of the allegations after noticing unusual activity on her social media platforms.

“So I have been told this morning I am trending. I know I have not posted anything major, so I also wonder why… Why did you report Opande?” she said.
Odhiambo added that she had to search for information about the individual before realising he was someone she had previously mentioned in connection with an earlier online controversy.
“Then I try to figure out who Opande is and why I am reporting him anywhere,” she noted.
Link to Earlier Viral Scandal
Odhiambo said her earlier post about the matter was motivated solely by her long-standing advocacy against gender-based violence and exploitation, not by any intent to target an individual personally.
She emphasised that condemning abuse does not equate to orchestrating punitive action against specific persons.
“Propaganda” Claims
The MP described the allegations as a coordinated attempt to damage her reputation, arguing that her involvement had been exaggerated or fabricated.

“The accusations against me are mere propaganda aimed at tainting my reputation,” she said, adding that she had no direct communication with Opande’s employer in the United States.
Odhiambo maintained that any employment decisions taken by a private organisation abroad could not reasonably be attributed to a social media post by a Kenyan legislator.
Responsibility Lies With Employer
“If his employer follows me and makes a decision based on my post, he is free to sue both the employer and me,” she stated, underscoring that she had not requested or demanded any disciplinary action.
Legal experts note that employment decisions in the U.S. are typically governed by internal policies and labour laws, making external political influence unlikely unless formal complaints are lodged.
Continued Advocacy Against Abuse
Odhiambo reaffirmed her commitment to speaking out against gender-based violence, saying public backlash would not deter her from advocating for victims.

Ongoing Public Debate
The controversy highlights the growing power of social media in shaping public narratives and the risks faced by public figures whose statements can be amplified or misinterpreted online.
It also underscores broader concerns about privacy, digital ethics, and accountability when personal disputes become viral spectacles.
As of now, no official documentation has emerged linking the MP to any formal complaint or action against Opande.
For many observers, the episode reflects how rapidly misinformation can spread in the digital age, drawing public officials into controversies far beyond their direct involvement.

Odhiambo urged the public to verify information before sharing it and called for responsible online engagement to prevent reputational harm based on unverified claims.
