Massive Fire Breaks Out in Ruiru, Destroying Properties
The inferno broke out in the early morning hours near the entrance to the Ruiru Municipality offices, adjacent to the Ruiru Chief’s offices, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering panic among traders and residents in the area. Several makeshift business structures, most of them constructed from iron sheets, were completely razed before the fire could be contained.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing what sounded like an explosion moments before the blaze erupted, raising suspicions that a gas leak or flammable material may have triggered the fire. By mid-morning, flames were still visible in parts of the area, as business owners watched helplessly while their livelihoods were consumed.

Photos and videos circulating online showed rows of stalls engulfed in flames as the fire rapidly spread from one structure to another. Despite the scale of the incident, no fatalities had been reported by the time of publication. However, authorities had not confirmed whether any individuals sustained injuries or the full extent of the losses incurred.
Notably, several residents expressed concern over the delayed response, saying no emergency service providers were immediately visible at the scene during the initial stages of the fire.
Biashara Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kimani Nduta raised alarm over the circumstances surrounding the incident, suggesting the fire may not have been accidental. He claimed the blaze could have been deliberately set to disrupt a public participation meeting that had been scheduled to take place in the area later that day.

“We were to have a public participation meeting to see how people may vacate here and whether they may be compensated after they leave,” Nduta said.
According to the MCA, the meeting was intended to engage local traders on plans to vacate the area safely, amid discussions on relocation and possible compensation. He questioned the timing of the fire, saying it coincided too closely with the planned forum to be ignored.
“We were really waiting for the meeting, but instead of a meeting we woke up to a fire. I am wondering what kind of coincidence this is. I have so many questions,” he added.
The Ruiru incident comes barely days after another major fire destroyed part of Golden Africa Limited, an oil manufacturing company located along Mombasa Road, on Tuesday, February 3. That blaze resulted in losses estimated at millions of shillings and disrupted operations at the facility.
The Machakos County Government later confirmed that the Golden Africa fire had been contained through a coordinated response involving the county fire brigade, private emergency teams, and national disaster response agencies.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti said the joint operation helped prevent the fire from spreading further, noting that industrial fires posed a serious risk due to the presence of highly combustible materials.

While the cause of the Ruiru fire remains under investigation, preliminary observations suggest that the presence of flammable materials and closely packed structures may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
As affected traders begin to count their losses, pressure is mounting on authorities to strengthen fire preparedness, improve emergency response times, and address safety concerns in densely populated business areas.
